"Gap" in Studs

Recommended Posts

While this is not a fine woodworking question, I thought some of you might have some insights into something I'm trying to wrap my head around.

I am installing a bunch of French cleats in my garage to try to finally organize the mess that is my shop. I started by using the stud finder to get the center of the studs. I then snapped a chalk line as a reference for driving the anchors. The cleats are about 2.5 inches thick, and I am using 2 screws in that 2.5 inch section per stud to attach them. I am using a jig to line up the pilot holes so that the screws are both on the chalk line.

I have easily driven 100 screws already, and all but 2 hit the studs. For the 2 that did not hit the stud, the screw directly below it (on the same chalk line) hit the stud, as did every other screw below it. It is almost as if I found 2 holes in the studs. Has anyone run into something like this before? This is a garage wall with no windows, so I can't think of a reason why the builders would have left tiny gaps in the framing. Then again, I know nothing about framing.

No window does not necessarily mean they did not intend one at first. I also have seen a lot of what was mentioned above. More in post war and post depression homes, and more in homeowner framing.

Could also be a spot that was originally for something else, like a stove pipe or plumping or something, which was either removed and covered up or never installed. A lot of really weird things in my old house made sense once I met the neighbors and saw that all the houses in the development had been specced for a variety of options/upgrades that not everyone used. Like only one side of the street had basements, but all of the houses had the same framed in spot for the basement stairs.

Yah, I definitely have enough support. I was just trying to figure out what was going on. Thanks for the suggestions on why this might have happened. I also saw something after googling a bit on how framers will occasionally notch studs for one reason or another. I suppose if you drive enough screws, you are bound to find the notches and holes.
