Revisit an old project

This was installed several years ago. 2 years ago it was moved and reinstalled. Now I am moving it for the third and final time, I'm told...

But it is too wide. So I am shrinking the 2 towers. I told the customer that I was 50/50 on being successful and I might need to just salvage the panels and remake the towers. 

 

I was able to saw the units in half. Then pry off the face plates,  I added mechanical advantage  with some 1 x 3's to break the joint. Some needed repair others came out clean.

Above is the glue joint connecting the faceplate to the bulkhead. The edge had no breakage. In the picture the wood chunks is the back side of the faceplate. I cleaned it off with a pattern router bit with a bearing on the bottom. It worked.

I removed 3/8" flat grain plugs and removed the  screws. I then drilled out the hole to 1/4". Glued in dowels. I leveled the dowels and used it to mark a center point to drill a 1/2" fostner. Then drill through the dowel for a clearance hole for the screw. Pics of that later.

The oak plywood will be fitted to the dado. I cleaned up the broken part with a Mikita trim router with a 1/2" mortice bit. And I used a clamping straight edge to guide the router.

They qualify as special people in my universe. Also the frame and panels were worth saving and worth a try. It looks like I will be able to pull it off. It wasn't painted poplar...And it is time and material.

These are the old doors. I will salvage the panels for the new smaller doors.

Gaining ground. Next several projects. make doors, cut and resize bread board ends shelves, a lot more sanding, then varnish. I might be missing something. Pleasant work. I am happy to save the panels.

I got the doors hung. It has been a long time since I installed cabinet doors with the cabinets on the floor. With my aches and pains, it is hard for me to get on the floor to hang doors. Gee-dub showed me an idea that has been a big help to me in my old age. A collapsable bench that has 2 heights. On the bench it is much easier and no sore muscles. But this was too tall and dangerous to stand up on the bench.

These blum hinges added to the challenge of boring and locating the holes for the 2 screws on the right. On my belly on the concrete. This project has no back.

Next, the old shelves need to be cut smaller. Back to bench level work. Easier on my old bones.

Finished with waterlox. Happy with the door reveals. Easy to adjust with the blum hinges. Last is the crown. I will drill for the pulls on the job to match the dimensions on the other doors. Base moldings installed on the job.

Movers came to bring the towers home. Happy not to do that. Everybody that matters is extremely pleased, including me. A good friend who is an exceptional contractor/carpenter installs for me. I am the helper. He makes my work look better. No matter how good I make it.

I will try to get a picture after they load the shelves.

Nicely decorated by the client. I am pleased with the outcome. This is the third and final resting place for this project. At least that is what the client says.
