Keith5
Has anyone had experience cleaning feed rollers on a Dewalt 735 planer If so what did you use?
Popular Post gee-dub
I just use denatured alcohol since I always have it around. Lay a foil tray underneath to catch any drips or blobs of dissolved gunk. If they are really bad an old toothbrush is about as aggressive as I ever got. P.s. Good dust collection and careful material selection can keep the rollers from getting fouled as well. Milling products with active (semi-liquid) sap doesn't make much sense. Any money you save on poor material is eaten up by wasted time and maintenance.
wtnhighlander
I'll second that. Denatured alcohol does a fine job. Also note that waxing the bed reduces friction so that the rubber pressure rollers can pull the material through more easily.
Ronn W
I use mineral spirits and it seems to work but I think I will give alcohol a try.
oldman_pottering
I'm the only one I know of that has had trouble with a delaminating roller on one of these and I often wonder was it due to cleaning the rollers with isopropyl alcohol, only one roller was faulty and it got replaced under warranty ( I had not done a lot of work with it) but to this day I still wonder was it me or was it just a fault, is Isopropyl alcohol the same as denatured ?
Ron Swanson Jr.
+1 to denatured alcohol. I ended up replacing the rollers on my first DW735 after about 15 years of constant use. Easy enough to do, and it breathed new life into the machine.
Mark J
@D W C, are you saying you had to replace the rollers because of using denatured alcohol, or that DNA got you 15 years of use?

Hi Mark It was DEFINITELY due to age and use, and not from Alcohol. They became very brittle after all that time and stopped feeding effectively. Popular Post IraSch
+1 again for denatured alcohol. Also seems to rejuvenate the grip on rollers in other applications.
roughsawn
What is the advantage to denatured alcohol over mineral spirits?
wtnhighlander
Maybe none at all. I don't know the roller composition, but alcohol is known to attack natural rubber where petroleum distillates do not. Perhaps spirits are a better choice. Tpt life
Alcohols are better for waxes, spirits are better for oils.
