Coop Posted September 19, 2025 Report Posted September 19, 2025 And by durable, I mean scratch resistant and other properties they may have. Throwing three out there for opinions. 1) Minwax Polycrylic 2) General Finishes WB HP 3) General Finishes ARS 1 Quote
B1rdhunter Posted September 19, 2025 Report Posted September 19, 2025 Got no idea, used all three but I use number two all the time now for spraying. 2 Quote
Ron Swanson Jr. Posted September 19, 2025 Report Posted September 19, 2025 Tough to beat their Arm R Seal. I've always been partial to oil based poly, as i think it brings out color and figure better than water based. Water based always looks kind of dull to me. I've used the Polycrilic in the past with no complaints. 1 Quote
Popular Post wtnhighlander Posted September 19, 2025 Popular Post Report Posted September 19, 2025 I'd pick Arm-R-Seal from that list, but I also like Minwax Tung Oil Finish. Very similar to ARS, but easier for me to find locally. ... but if durability / scratch resistance is the diving factor, consider a pour-over epoxy... 4 Quote
curlyoak Posted September 24, 2025 Report Posted September 24, 2025 Arm-r-Seal High gloss. My guess is the more urethane/gloss the longer it lasts. 2 Quote
Popular Post Coop Posted September 25, 2025 Author Popular Post Report Posted September 25, 2025 My present and past has been two coats of ARS gloss and the last coat of ARS satin. Thanks guys. I guess I’ll stick with this. I may try the Minwax Tung Oil as suggested as well as I have to drive 20 miles each way to Rockler for the ARS. As far as the durability, a friend makes frames for his photo prints and uses the Minwax poly and was asking. It’s not like someone is going to skateboard on the frames but thought I would put it out here for opinions. 3 Quote
B1rdhunter Posted September 25, 2025 Report Posted September 25, 2025 If I am just doing a few frames or something small a couple rattle cans of Deft Clear wood finish is hard to beat. Quote
gee-dub Posted September 25, 2025 Report Posted September 25, 2025 Not on your list but, like B1rdhunter I use rattle cans for 1 or 2 small items. That is, not for a dozen . Watco spray lacquer comes in different glosses and dries to touch in about 30 minutes. Also comes in handy for small repairs. Self-levels, dries to touch quickly and full-cures in 24 hours. I can spray a small box, go get a cup of coffee, come back and pick up the box and move it to a curing area without leaving a mark. 1 Quote
pkinneb Posted September 25, 2025 Report Posted September 25, 2025 Like @gee-dub I use rattle can spray lacquer for small projects and have had good experience with both Deft and Watco. Quote
