JohnnyNoName
Here's a small question. What brand/kind of double-dtick tape do you use in the shop? I have tried two types, one was for photographs that came in a dispenser. It was too weak. The other was a carpet tape. I found that it was inconsistent in its adhesion and the residual "glue" that it leaves is a pain to get off. Does anyone have a preferred double-sided tape? duckkisser
denatured alcohol works well to remove the tape and it take any glue left on the wood surface off.
wdwerker
I use the Ace Hardware store brand carpet tape. It's cheap and works. I keep it in a zip bag . Dirt and dust and dings in the edge of a roll of tape are your enemy. I put the tape on one part, leaving the backer strip in place, and rub it down tight, peel and position the other part. I usually give it a thump with a rubber hammer to insure a good bond. MDF templates with a clear coat give a great bond, often allowing repeated reuse for a number of parts. Blow all the dust off before you peel off the part and cover the tape when unused with the backer strip to keep dust off. I have tried the expensive tapes and didn't get mush better results. Only tiny parts were worth the $$ stuff. Over4 or5 square inches the cheap is fine.
duckkisser
i think the trick is using enough tape if you dont use enough it pops off. for my turnings i usually use hot glue. fast and it holds and the glue comes right off after your done
Jim Heinbuch
If I remember right I bought mine from Lee Valley. The store is only two hours away but only 10 minutes from our children. Waaaay toooooooo tempting! It works great.
Vic
Jonathon, I use DUCK Brand Tapes. I pick it up at Lowes. It's fairly thin, versus a normal carpet tape I had tried before.
Sac
I use the Rockler Turners Tape. It is nice.. Thick and sticks well, doesnt leave any residue. It is a little pricey, but I like it.
CessnaPilotBarry
I use Duck carpet tape from the big boxes. I can get 2-3 parts from each application before it's no longer sticky enough. Residue easily comes of with alchohol, scraping, or sanding. Separate the template from the parts with a 4" drywall knife. The key to this stuff is getting the hang of how much to use. Too much = hard to separate Too little = moving templates I don't bother to clearcoat the template.

Dan S
I use Rockler turners tape usually, but when I need to bond really big things, I use outdoor carpet tape.
