davewyo
I worked out my design over the last couple of weeks. I'm thinking Alder legs and front apron(because I have some 6/4 Alder), and then a "floating" top of Walnut. I haven't decided on the species for the sides but it will be Alder or Walnut. First off...I made up some templates out of MDF and a mock leg from 2x4 pine. http:// The leg: http:// Hours 1 and 2 today I traced off the legs http:// and cut them on the bandsaw. http:// Tonight it's the Broncos on MNF and sharpening up my spokeshaves. http:// D
wtnhighlander
Interesting leg design, Dave. Looks like one I recently saw referred to as 'egyptian', but without a foot. Should be a nice table!
davewyo
Thanks Ross! The leg design is entirely "experimental" and may be a total flop, but I'm just winging it...seeing how it turns out. I wanted to do some curves and contours on this project. Early on I saw Eric's incredible hall table when I was searching for "floating table top" and I love it. I was thinking about tossing any design I was fiddling with and going with that, but I can always do one similar to Eric's if mine looks like crap, or whatever. I appreciate your "take"...now, if anyone asks, I'll tell them I was inspired by Egyptians.
wtnhighlander
Wish I could recall the site where I saw that table. The legs had a similar curve, and an inward facing foot. Very different from most western traditional stuff I have seen, and quite appealing.

davewyo
3 degrees F when I went out to the shop this morning. 40 deg. in the shop, but it heated up quick. Hour 3 I slapped my template onto my legs and started in with a flush trim bit in my palm router. I was only taking off a tiny bit of stock; trying to get all the legs uniform before I move on to rounding things over. The first two legs went great. On the third for some unknown reason it became difficult to keep the router bearing running smoothly along the edge of the template. I made a few nice divots in the edge of #3, but I figured I could salvage it in the rounding stage. Leg #4 was a disaster. Not really salvageable. I couldn't understand what my problem was. Perhaps not enough coffee. Hour 4 So I made up legs 5 & 6. slapped on the template and started in. As I was about six inches in my run the bit started running wonky again, tipped into the stock. and ripped out a nice chunk. It's hard to explain how the router felt except to explain that when I shut down and examined the situation I found that the collar which holds the bearing to the bit shaft had loosened. So the bearing was moving up and down on the shaft in that little gap you leave when you insert your router bits. http:// Lesson learned. I should have stopped as soon as the router felt different. I'm taking a break, tightening the collar with a tiny hex wrench, and going back out to make leg #7 in a little while.

davewyo
You know it! I'm getting pretty good at these legs. Hour 5: I made a replacement template for the one that got dinged during my router antics. Double stick tape and flush trimmed leg #6. I did up leg #7: http:// Now I have four: http:// Still had 15 mins. to run the shop vac. Hour 6: Put in a round-over bit and made 16 passes: http:// Then some rasp and the rough legs are ready for morticing. http:// Time for some breakfast/lunch. davewyo
Half of hour 10 was spent completing the aprons: http:// That's about it for the day. I'll save cutting the curves on the aprons until I complete the joinery for the floating top. D

davewyo
Thanks Kev. I was trying to be friendly but overstepped some pretty obvious boundaries. I wasn't thinking clearly and I mostly feel bad that I involved Ken. That was doubly wrong. So anyway...like woodworking,I learned something and I'll not make that blunder again.
