ChrisG-Canada
I really like Arm-R-Seal (ARS) and I've read some recommendations to only buy the gloss version and add flatteners as needed. It's an interesting idea but I'm having trouble figuring out what to buy, where to buy and what the mix ratios should be so here are my questions... Is there a specific General Finishes, or other manufacturer product you can recommend that works with ARS? Where do you even buy flattener? What's your mix ratio? Brendon_t
What would be the reason to only buy gloss and flatten it? I use ARS satin and it does fine.
TerryMcK
I have to agree - buy it premixed as matt, satin, semi gloss or gloss. No point in mixing your own.
drzaius
I think is was Trip that said this is what he does. The advantage being that you only need to stock 1 kind of ARS. Less chance of expired finish. And by using gloss as the base coats, there isn't any clouding of the built up finish. Then mix up the desired level of sheen for the final coat. Whether of not the cloudiness is noticeable or not is another discussion.
Guest
GF does not make its own flattening agent. Here is one commercially available brand. http://www.westmarine.com/buy/interlux--one-part-flattening-agent--516559
Trip
Been using this for maybe 5 or 10 years. works well... http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=135 I get off-the-gun shellac and lacquer, so don't rub-out unless it's a piano finish. For solvent lacquers, I use Mohawk's flattener: http://www.mohawk-finishing.com/catalog_browse.asp?ictnbr=260 For shellac: http://www.finishsupply.com/ShellacFlatting.html Mohawk also makes some waterborne flatteners, but don't shoot waterborne... I can't recommend them, but in general, Mohawk makes a good product.
rodger.
I use minwax wipe on poly in satin all the time - I never buy gloss.
