hdtech
this is my first post on this forum. I recently had the time and opportunity to mill up a lot I collected about a year ago. most of the wood was in good shape except a lot of these small black holes made by some kinda bug. I've never seen these before. so my question would be is what are they and what to look for to spot future problem logs before wasting time killing them. Tpt life
Tiny holes are typically powder post beetles. Minimal kiln time usually fixes this issue. The holes remain. Someone else here may have a non-kiln answer. Welcome to the forums!
Keggers
+1 on the powder post beetles. Powder post beetles generally can't live in wood that has a moisture content below 13% according to the University of Kentucky.
davewyo
What kind of lumber?
Coop
If it's a small enough amount of lumber, tightly enclose it with some dry ice. Carbonate those suckers!
wtnhighlander
Someone else (BoatworksToday, I think) recommended washing the wood down with acetone, liberally.

hdtech
is it still able to be used if I can plane down past the holes. they weren't in the hole log just the outside couple inches. all the boards I cut below that were clear of the little holes. duckkisser
if you look at the second picture down at my night light my advice if the bugs are not a future problem then you just make the holes a part of the piece.
davewyo
I agree that what you have there looks like powder post beetle. As Keggers said, U of Kentucky has an article which may help: My biggest concern would be cross contamination. I would store it away from my home, perhaps in my burn pile. I guess it would depend on if I saw continued activity such as "frass" building up. D
hdtech
thanks for all your reply's. it's just annoying to waste time milling only to make unusable lumber.
