This Made Me Sick!

I was milling a beautiful piece of 8/4 curly cherry today and my day was soon ruined. This beautiful piece of wood has what I think are stress checks on both faces. I don't know if there is any salvageable wood in the whole piece. Maybe a pen maker could find some usable wood. Anyone interested let me know. The checks sure did ruined my day.

Too bad, that's a wicked looking piece.  That kind of figure in cherry happens when heartwood and sapwood get all intertwined with each other and make a baby.  Looks awesome, only problem is heartwood and sapwood move at different rates.  Not drastically, but enough that it can cause issues like that.  Lots of tension.  Either that or it was improperly dried.  Either way...too bad. :(

Too pretty to toss! I would desparately try to stabilize it some way, maybe even resaw it into thick veneers to put on a more stable substrate.

Before I gave up on that piece I would definitely try to stabilize it.  I have used PEG (polyethylene glycol-1000) on small pieces of wood and have been pleased with the results. Rockler sells the stuff and it is not hard to use.  Here is a link to an oldie but goody pdf that I keep around for reference.  http://owic.oregonstate.edu/sites/default/files/pubs/peg.pdf.
