h3nry
John, It's looking awesome, I can't wait to hear it in action - you've got to post a video when you're done.
John Page
Cheers Henry! I'm still blundering my way through trying to learn a few simple things on it, but I'll for sure be doing some recording!

John Page
Thanks Terry! It's been a lot of change around these parts lately, but I finally managed to get some work done on this thing. It is (still) playable and I am so close to being done. At the moment, it's not looking like I will be able to respectably play it for a recording, so I've been talking with some friends who have more talent than I. In this post, I did the perfling and made the bridge. Made from some old ebony piano keys, I think the bridge is my favourite part of this whole thing. There's something mystically alluring to me about incorporating the past lives of materials into an entirely new (but not necessarily unrelated) life. Journal Part XII Cheers! John Page
It's been a while since I've posted anything on this but I promise it's not been forgotten! I did not realise when I ordered the inlay for the fret markers that it's on backorder and might not be here until August Until then, it gives me the chance to find and convince someone to let me record them playing it, so I guess there's a silver lining in there somewhere. While I'm waiting for some things to arrive, I decided to put up the last set of pictures I have of the progress thus far. Here, it's putting on the finish, strings, and hardware. Part XIII Cheers! Popular Post John Page
It's been a good long while since I've had anything to show on this, but I'm thrilled to say that the last few details are finally finished, and it's at last time to draw this to a conclusion. It'll be a short while before I get the final post together, but until then here are a few photos from inlaying the fret markers. Cheers! Popular Post John Page
Thanks! I might post another topic with only the finished shots in it, but here's the last part of the journal- Part XIV- Conclusion This was effectively my first ever 'woodworking project' and I learned a tremendous amount along the way. Although I've been around tools most my life, it is the application of them and the understanding of materials that makes the difference. And knowing about the thing you are making would have helped too As neither an experienced luthier nor having any ability to actually play the thing, there are a number of places where I would have taken a different approach, but for the experience gained in making this thing, it was well worth it. Looking back on the start of this, it was a year ago last week that I posted the first portion, which began about a month before that. Time flies, and more often than not I'm left wondering where it all goes. At least this time, there's something to show for at the end of it. Thanks everyone for following along, being able to share the process is half the fun! John

wtnhighlander
John, it looks awesome? How does it sound?
John Page
I'm actually a little surprised by how clean and warm it sounds. Although I have never played the guitar before and therefore have little to compare it to, I'd say that it has a slightly less full bodied sound (probably because of the slightly thinner side height compared to other acoustic guitars) but picks up a bit of a Spanish or Celtic feel in the process. Once I am proficient enough to record a few simple things, I'll be putting together a video of what it sounds like!

wtnhighlander
I look forward to the audio, as well. I take it this instrument is closer to guitar size, than mandolin size? I'm not familiar with the mandola, and your wonderfully composed photos don't include any clear visual cues as to the size scale of the instrument. Check the fret spacing against some instruments that are more common.
Janello
John, I really enjoyed this journal. You did an amazing job on this and should be proud of the results.
John Page
Thanks all! It is more or less guitar sized. The fretboard and string length are matched to acoustic guitars, and the body is roughly proportional to that. I'm not too sure what the body dimensions for an acoustic guitar are, but given how the tailpiece fits in and the residual string length past the bridge, I'd say its probably close. Cheers!
