Chewie17
Just picked up an old hand plane from a local general store. I tried to date it myself with the help of the Internet and came out with a 1944-1947 however there are some features that don't match. Some general details. Stanley bailey no. 4 hand plane. Corrugated sole No. 4 are spaced about an 1" on the toe. Made in canada Brass angled knurled depth adjustment knob And here are some pictures for any info I left out. minorhero
Your pictures make it kinda hard to tell but based on what I can see this plane was made between 1931 and 1932. I used the hand plane flow chart to date it: http://hyperkitten.com/tools/stanley_bench_plane/start_flowchart.php I have a very very similar (possibly identical) number 4 hand plane. They are not really worth much in the way of money to a collector being very numerous. But its an absolutely fantastic user. I love mine and its probably my go to plane for most flattening operations as its easier to use then a number 5 being smaller but otherwise does a similar activity. Chewie17
Thanks. I used that same chart and the made in the USA threw me a little. I thought it was the type 17? But I don't care what it would cost as a collectors plane. I just thought it would be cool to know the history of it. Popular Post wdwerker
It's an old plane, it might take more than 3 dates to get anywhere ! <grin>
RichardA
Generally the Stanley planes made during the war years didn't have a brass knob, they were some hard black material, and for the life of me as old as I am, I can't remember what that material is! So it is definitely pre 1942!

Coop
Might not be as tight as a newer model but a few adjustments will make it just fine!

Take it from Coop. No one here on these forums knows more about Iron addatives and old soft wood.

Chewie17
Thanks for the input guys. Hopefully I can start buying some more hand planes and tools that post about the grizzly jointer plane for 60 looked like a rocket deal. Even though I'm in canada it would still be a decent price over anything from Lee valley Sent from my SM-G903W using Tapatalk
