Popular Post pkinneb
Well knocking out these jigs took way longer than I planned but they are done and now I can install a lock in about 15 min. 2 sets of lock jigs since the drawer locks and the top lock are different. I also need a set for the hinges. Stock all roughed out You start with the key hole jig as everything references off the key holes. The bodies are not centered so it takes a bit to get the set up lines for the jigs right but once set you are good to go. Next a ran a test of each lock here are the results. Here are the two sets of jigs. I marked them both for locks and the sequence so if I use them in the future I will remember how I did it.

Popular Post pkinneb
Got back out to the shop today. First up was cutting the top lock mortise now that the jigs are done that was a simple task. Next up was finishing the through mortises on the side panels as well as the rabbits I can live with that. And finally a dry assembly before preparing for finish. Next up finishing and the glue up which ought to be interesting

shaneymack
Really coming along nicely! Will you be leaving all the dovetails and tenons proud? I think that is what Mike P does right? Sent from my SM-N910W8 using Tapatalk
pkinneb
Thanks TIODS! shaneymack Thanks! Yes l will be leaving them proud like Mike did on the original. The only changes so far will be the tools/layout and I am also thinking of doing some kind of embellishment on the underside of the top panels but haven't decided yet since I have not actually done that before. I was looking at the lid Jameel Abraham did on the inside of the Chris Schwarz chest. Not that fancy but maybe something along those lines. After the glue up tonight I will begin working on the two drawers to give me some time to research and think about that a little more. pkinneb
Correct. Both I will be using it for a couple of classes this fall and then will use it in my shop until I build a wall cabinet someday.
pkinneb
Well the glue up is done all I have left on the chest section is one more coat of finish and I need to make up some English Oak 1/4" dowel for some pins in the tops, front and back.
TerryMcK
A nice mixture of power tool and hand tool work - I think Marc Spagnuolo calls it hybrid woodworking. The cabinet is looking great so far.

Popular Post pkinneb
Tonight I was able to cut some dowels with my Elkhead jig and get the pins all glued in. Tools for cutting dowels: First, with a test dowel in the jig you raise the blade and center the jig over the blade. Then mount it to the fence You hand turn about two inches into the jig then chuck it up and away you go here are the results at 3 spots on the dowel Then I cut them to size And finally install them Next up my first ever half blind DT drawers
Coop
OK, we've got a dowel making jig duel going on and both look like they do a great job!

pkinneb
LOL nah if I had to do it again I would go with the one shaneymack reviewed from Veritas if for nothing else the micro adjustment. On this jig you just move the fence so its not really a micro adjustment per se. Once you get it set it works great though. Also I think his kit was not to much more than I paid for the 1/4 and 3/8" jigs from Elkhead.

pkinneb
Thanks guys! shaneymack that's my new Woodriver 4 1/2 smoother. Haven't had time to clean it up and prep it for work. Picked it up at the Woodcraft 20% off sale for $136. The nice thing about this chest is that the dividers are not permanently installed so you can change it up if the need arises. pkinneb
Not much progress in the last few days between fathers day and being a bit under the weather but I did manage to get the top section dividers completed, for now at least. They may change as I use the chest but for now pretty much set. I will cut a drawer key holder into one of the blocks at the front then on to the drawers.
