Can I assume, with as popular and expensive as they are, that the lift allows you to change bits without taking the router out of the table? Do you access the collet with wrenches above or below the table top? You made the right assumptions. You access the collet from above the table, but sometimes a collet extension is advisable or required. I use the xtreme xtension Collett extension, lets me change bits with just an Allen wrench.
BillyJack
You can build router tables about anyway you can imagine. If you start out with a foundation that will allow you to expand as you go it will full fill your needs. Many build once and start over once they find it's reached it's limitations.
Mark J
OK, I'll take the bait, @BillyJack. Why a two sided router table?

Cope and stick without changing your setup. On another forum a guy built a three router door making station; cope stick and raised panel. Very logical if you are cranking out kitchen doors like crazy.
..Kev
Yea, I can see lots of uses for multiple sides! A shaper on the third side would be extra cool! Cope, stick, and raised panel in one set up!

jplemons
I like my Incra setup -- table top and 17" positioner. I stuck it on a Kreg base I had, but I'll probably change it soon. I have a Triton router in it and don't use a lift.
andrew-in-austin
I am also in the process of building my router table. Incra fence & positioner, Jessem lift, and for now an Incra top. Eventually, I am considering building my own top and adding the SawStop sliding crosscut table dedicated to the router table. Sounds crazy, and kind of ridiculous cost, but a sliding table for a router setup IMO would be quite nice. Would make coping type cuts a breeze. Yes, "might as well get a shaper" probably applies here, but shapers don't turn high RPM and shaper cutters are very expensive.

It comes with a sliding table already.
andrew-in-austin
The Festool table in the CMS seems like a toy compared to the SawStop sliding table. It's also way overpriced.

It doesn't look like a heavy duty workhorse though, gotta agree on that. I guess it depends on your workflow.
Mick S
Three-sided shapers are not uncommon in the cabinet door business. It takes so much time to set them up correctly that it makes all kinds of sense. Set em and leave em.

Mark J
Any thoughts on MLCS products? http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/smarthtml/pages/routertable.html I'm particularly curious about the Flatbed Horizontal Table and the Precision Table. The Flatbed thing is just weird, but since the table and fence are one in the same and aligned with gravity that might be an advantage. Maybe. The Precision description describes it as a "sliding table", but the pictures don't depict the same.
a1606myrsclm
Here is picture of mine, I use a Bosch router with their base. It has a loft built into it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
