mdbuilder
Took a little time off last night as my 22 year old slid over a curb in a rain storm and damaged the car, he's fine. Anyway, tonight I milled up and drum sanded the parts for the base and cove moldings.

wtnhighlander
Those pieces look kind of long for standing on end through the saw. Do you do anything special to make them more stable in the sled?

Do you do anything special to make them more stable in the sled? I use the clamp shown + 'clamp' it with a hand hold. The board is vertical and quite stable as long as you move the sled smoothly and make the direction change pulling back out of the cut slowly. If you jerk it a bit yeah, it'll wobble a couple degree's. Just don't do that
mdbuilder
Also, when I actually made the cut I had both long pieces clamped together and did em at the same time. Which meant they were 1.5" wide. Didn't do that with the case sides though.
mdbuilder
Oooops looks like I'll be gluing on some tenon cheeks. Corner #4, the other 3 are good.

wtnhighlander
I'm fairly certain that has happened to anyone who ever cut a dovetail, at least once!

wtnhighlander
Hey, if anyone ever inspects closely enough to see that, just tell them it is a wedged, through dovetail, for added strength.
Popular Post mdbuilder
Lol! The center pint is slightly off center by the extra thickness I had to add on one side. Would have been invisible if it was centered. Anyway cut out the curves, need some spoke shaving and spindle sanding to clean up the bandsaw marks.
mdbuilder
Base is in the clamps. I'll get it glued on by the end of the day. Time for molding.

Popular Post mdbuilder
Got the molding installed and the cove cut on the underside of the lid. Need to order another hinge from Horton as I only ordered 2
Coop
Looking darn good! What type of hinge are you using?
mdbuilder
Simple 2.5" butt hinge.
Coop
They look to be 180* hinges. Will you be having some sort of stop for them at 95* or so?
mdbuilder
I have a slow close strut, two actually but I'll see how one does first
Popular Post treeslayer
We think alike, did this one several years ago it was starting to get some color when I took this shot, yours is beautiful well done sir !

Coop
When I built mine several years ago, as I am inclined to do, I did a bit of overthinking. I used three where two of the torsion hinges would have sufficed. And being a blanket chest and not a finger smashing toy chest, it gets opened and closed about 6 times a year.
mdbuilder
Yep, thought the same thing. One never knows when another little one might show up after spending 20 years getting rid of the first gen so maybe better safe than sorry. I'll add the strut just for the hell of it. Makings of a mortising jig for the lid. Raising the blade through a scrap of MDF for the back wall, scrap = to the thickness of the case side cut to the width of the hinge to guide the side cuts.
