Popular Post mdbuilder
Ok, jig is finished. Works really well with a 3/8" mortising bit, just need to fine tune the depth on the router.
mdbuilder
So, I've got two hinges mortised in and installed. Everything works nice, what about the gap? The leaves are flush with the surface, do I need to go deeper? Not much experience with hinging <g>.
wtnhighlander
Depending upon the barrel, I have occasionally had to mortice the leaves a bit below flush to eliminate all gap. Examine carefully, as I can't really tell if that is your issue.
mdbuilder
I guess that is the question, should there be no gap? The hinge has a gap when you just close the leaves, if no gap is the goal they will need to go deeper
wtnhighlander
Personally, I think the tiny gap is less distracting than a deeply inset hinge would be.

Yep, plus it leaves a bit of room for a thin bumper up front.

wtnhighlander
Where did you source that strut?
mdbuilder
Amazon, Apexstone soft close lid support, 17.99 for a pair.
Coop
The gap is just right unless you are storing old nasty socks and underwear.

Love it. Going away for a couple days so I'll be quite <g>. Only thing left is the cross braces for the underside of the top then sanding and finishing... Popular Post mdbuilder
Back in town, I've added the third hinge and the second strut. Need to fab the 2 cleats for the underside of the lid and then sand everything in preparation for finish. I've got the Danish oil and the other oil for the outside in stock, a gallon of sealcoat for the inside arrives Friday. Kind of annoying that no local retail outlets carries the sealcoat anymore, waxed shellac yes but no plain dewaxed sealcoat. Oh yeah, snapped the head off one hinge screw (steel!!) driving it by hand with no wax applied to the thread. Guess I'll need to dig that out and plug the hole the redrill...
Popular Post mdbuilder
Got the cleats dabbed and installed this morning. Construction is now complete, let the sanding begin!

It will keep your ts top much more cleaner if you don’t have an assembly bench.

curlyoak
If there was no gap it would be hinge bound. You got it right!
mdbuilder
Top is done, maybe a bit more buffing but the wax is on, cleats screwed on etc. Need more Danish oil for the case, hopefully the hardware store around the corner will have some, Lowes does not

mdbuilder
Second coat of satin Waterlox is on, lid just loosely resting in place. The inside is still raw, I'll finish up the inside and bottom with a couple wash coats of shellac this weekend.
