I mix a little lye powder with water, and wipe the surface with a rag saturated in it. Allow to dry and sand with high grit, like raising the grain. Repeat until you are happy with the appearance. Neutralize with a wipe-down of vinegar before applying finish, or it will ruin the topcoat. DAMHIK. Experiment on some scrap, and use appropriate PPE. I seen where some people use powdered lime when finishing, could this be why it's used...?
wtnhighlander
I thought the powdered lime gave a faded / whitewashed effect? Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong process. BTW, you can purchase lye powder over the internet, but I used Drain-O Crystals drain cleaner. The active ingredient is lye, but it also contains metal shavings, I assume to help 'scrub' the pipe clean. If you go that route, take care not to pich up shavings in the wiping rag. Chestnut
Awesome work this looks great. To get some of the aged color wait for a nice sunny day with no rain forecast and set it outside. It might take a few days but it should darken.
