Immortan D
This is what happens when you drop a LN #3 bronze plane: A split knob, a twisted brass screw. I tried to straighten it to no avail. I glued back the knob and replaced the screw with a steel one, until I get the original part. It happens. TerryMcK
Send it back to LN. They will repair it so it is as good as new.

I think I'm going to ask them to include the screw and knob in my next order. There is no damage to the plane other than that.
Chet
You didn't think to stick your foot under it to brake the fall???
Immortan D
I value my toes more! I was wearing sandals.
Popular Post Eric.
I think you got off a little light in the punishment department. 50 lashings, rubber hose, self-inflicted. Do it.
Trip
==>I think you got off a little light in the punishment department. He sure did... If it had been a BCTW, then it would have landed butter-side down... That's why I could never own a BCTW plane... BTW: LN will send the replacement part free of charge and/or you could just send them the pane... When I need spare parts (over the years, I've had two block planes fall from my bench -- happened all by itself -- really), I usually combine parts with an order new kit so that they are not out the postage... I've always had good luck with their customer service... Several years ago, I had a rust issue (again, not my fault -- the shop gremlins strike again), and they re-surfaced a set of bench planes -- again, no charge... LN's a class act...

Immortan D
I placed a new order and asked for the replacement parts in the "notes" section of the order... FIVE minutes later, I received an updated order including those parts at no extra charge... I love this company.
xxdabroxx
I still haven't learned to value my toes. I was making a kydex sheath for a tomahawk once and it slipped out of the press. What was the first thing I did? Yup, you guess it. Put my foot under it. I had finished sharpening and polishing it just before making the sheath. From bench height it sliced right through my vans and into my foot, nice 1/2" long by 1/4" deep gash. Saved the edge though!!!
Immortan D
I too learned the hard way to stay away from falling tools.
xxdabroxx
I find lifting my foot a few inches off the ground before putting it under the falling object helps. Gives you time to slow the fall without directly smashing your foot.
Janello
I feel for ya. 10 minutes after I got done honing a brand new two cherries mortise chisel I dropped it business side down on my concrete floor. It looked like a paint can opener.

Chestnut
These stories are making me cringe. I catch things with my feet all the time, but i wear steel toe shoes in my shop. I tried it once and being able to set heavy boards on my toes became helpful. I've been wearing them ever since.
