..Kev
I'm with you Steve! Definitely not the fun part!
Guest
-->"closer to 300". but you probably have 172 pounds of cut-offs, router chips, planer shavings and saw dust! that is a lot of shaping!
wdwerker
Finally got it all sanded and started final assembly. I was worried that the posts and railings needed to be as rigid as possible so every possible intersection got glued and a few discrete screws. Plenty of glue for the intersection of the bottom post and the staircase. And there it is finally assembled !
..Kev
Awesome work Steve! That'll be fun to finish
Eric.
That looks fantastic, Steve. I love the detail where the tops of the "legs" transition from square posts into the roundover of the rails. That's awesome. A piece that's suitable for the most noble of libraries. Can't wait to see this thing with finish! Well done...
Pbmaster11
Hopefully you can get it out of the shop and into the clients space. Typing on cell phone. I apologize for any typing errors.
wdwerker
Big loading dock door at the shop and double French doors into the library from the outside. I thought of that when drawing it up. I can take the caster mount base pieces off and get the ladder under 95" tall but I don't think it will be needed. Kinda considering going in today to pull the clamps and start doing sample finishes.

pghmyn
I don't know if I missed it, but what type of finish are you planning for this? Same as those tables?
wdwerker
Client was out of town, finally dropped by the shop today and approved the finish sample and climbed to try out the stairs. She was quite impressed and wants her architect and decorator to see my work ! The finish is going to be a light coat of a medium brown stain with a satin clear finish. wtnhighlander
Always good to impress the clients. More so the female ones!
G S Haydon
I'm also looking forward to the final in situ shot. Steve this has been very very cool to read through. It's nice to see a large sized piece. I like how you use your knowledge and creativity to make this, justifying your choices based on sound experience! Really want to see an install shot. wdwerker
Finally got back to the staircase today. Had to flip it 3 different ways to get every nook and cranny stained. Only found 3 or 4 little spots where the glue had prevented the stain from soaking in. Sanded them out and carefully blended in the color and I am ready to start shooting finish tomorrow.

Janello
That really looks amazing. I agree, the color is perfect and really accentuated all those lines. It's the first staircase I've ever seen that could and should be described as fine furniture.

baok
What this needs to go with it is one of those bookshelf doors that opens onto a secret room. You're just the man that can do it!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
wdwerker
Two coats on every surface ! Tired and sweaty and I hear a comfy barstool calling my name......
Eric.
Dang Steve, you need sunglasses to work in your shop. Looks like a night game at the old Busch Stadium. I love the way your shop looks...it's dripping with use. Every past project leaves a remnant of itself behind and creates another layer of character. Reminds me of my great grandfather's bench. Makes me all warm and fuzzy. Staircase is looking good...can't wait to see 'er all done.
wdwerker
All the lights were aimed so I could see every nook and cranny to spray. Right after spraying the overspray hanging in the air really halos the lights. I killed all the lights for this shot.

wdwerker
Drop dead gorgeous Steve! Many thanks! I am watching your bedside tables progress eagerly . They look beautiful . I am not looking forward to Monday, sanding this huge complex shape is not going to be fun at all !
Tpt life
The curves make such a huge difference between the largely utilitarian pieces I have made and the fine work you are doing. This has been a valuable lesson for me.
