Popular Post theodorescott
The oval is about 10 inches at the maximum and 7 inches at the minimum. I've made a bunch of these Shaker boxes, but I like to make small changes each time. This was the first time trying this color scheme. Maple sides, birdseye top. Black milk paint and shellac.

wtnhighlander
Very nice! Do you have a form to bend around? I recall an episode of the Woodwright's Shop, in which Roy demonstrated these boxes. Seems like he used a bending form and/or some sort of 'anvil' for bradding the copper tacks, but I don't remember it it was two tools or one. wdwerker
Very nice work! Care to share any pictures of the process you use to make them ?
theodorescott
Yes, I bend the wood around a core. Then I tack them using an anvil - I have the little blue one that Lee Valley sells. Then I have tapered oval shapers that help hold the oval shape while they dry. Here are some in process photos (in no particular order). These are from various other times I have made these. I don't have and pictures with the cores, since that isn't a step where I want to stop and take pictures.

Byrdie
Very nice. Great explanation of the way you do it. Those should be real popular.
Barry Richardson
Cool Theo, the milk paint is a great idea. I got into shaker boxes, about,..... shees, 20 years ago now and I always plan to get into it again, but life happens, I gave most of them to friends and family, still have a few, and still have the bending forms, after moving about 10 times since then,.... thanks for the inspiration! Maybe I will do it now, and change it up with milk paint...

Gorgeous! I am all over the combination of black painted wood with natural wood and this is especially beautiful. My women's woodworking group has a demo on how to make Shaker boxes on our upcoming calendar and now I am really excited about it.
