Megashed
I recently got a couple of plywood router bits and realized my amount of singles are catching up on me. I decided to build a storage cabinet and found a plan I liked on the net. I made some changes, a little deeper to allow for a french cleat, and some adjustments to the bit shelves to allow for my larger panel cutter bits. The cabinet is maple. I got the carcass lumber milled and assembled last saturday. I had to glue up two pieces of 3/4" to get to the 1.5" needed for the shelves... thinking its time to get more clamps. I made two bottom drawers out of mdf, this was my first kick at using a drawer lock bit, obviously my setup could use some work, but for a shop cabinet it should be fine. Next I milled up the bit shelves Then onto the holes. I made the two top shelves on each tier for 1/4" bits. I made a small counter sink for a 1/2" at every hole to make it easy if I ever want to widen them out. And more holes... Putting the bit shelves together, a 20 degree angle on the backs will give the shelves a nice forward tilt. Starting to come together, next weekend I plan to built a door using some acrylic for the "glass"
..Kev
Looking awesome! Looks like you'll get quite a few bits in there!
Megashed
Thanks. 120 bits total. It will leave a lot of growing room for my collection outside of cased sets.
Trip
Boy, it puts what I did to shame... I built ten drawers for my router table put a 6/4 10"x17" slab of EWP in each and drilled a matrix of 1/2", 8mm and 1/4" holes... I thought it was top-shelf, then I saw that last photo or two of your storage rack... You've raised the bar... From one ODC sufferer to another - Congrats... But, you know what's really going to hurt... That 121st bit... So Enjoy... For now...
Megashed
Thanks lol. Now I'm pondering future expansion... perhaps I could drill some extra holes in the top and sides..
..Kev
Thanks lol. Now I'm pondering future expansion... perhaps I could drill some extra holes in the top and sides.. It's on a french cleat.. Simple solution, just build a sister cabinet next to it
TerryMcK
Very good and most useful storage solution.
chefmagnus@grics.net
The cabinet that my friend left to me has a piece of wood with the profile of each bit attached to it and a hole for the shank of the bit drilled into it. I know that I am doing a terrible job of explaining this.
Megashed
I'm picking up what your laying down Chef. I've thought about the need for labels, not really a need, but handy for some rabbiting bits and such. I have access to a p-touch label maker through work, so I'm planning on labeling certain parking spots that way. Can you post a photo of your storage? ..Kev
It's a handy idea for those odd ball bits that you end up with that only get used occasionally. Most of the bits are obvious tho.

Megashed
I was surprised the plan was online for free. After I clicked and opened the pdf file, the site said "thanks for your plan purchase"...odd... Not sure what the rules are on here about links so I won't post it, but it's easy to find with a quick Google search.
chefmagnus@grics.net
I did not make it to that corner of the shop to get a picture today. I did find a similar picture of what Paul had done. I believe that it is from Wood mag. http://www.woodmagazine.com/woodworking-tips/techniques/skills/drilling-tips/?catref=wd146&page=1 http://images.meredith.com/wood/images/2010/02/ss_bitHolder.jpg Paul took it a step farther. He cut a 1" profile of each bit and glued it onto the front of the shelf that holds the bits. Even I can get the bit back to the proper location. He used left overs from the projects that he used the bit for. Each of the profiles are in different woods.

Scott Bailey
are those shelves installed at an angle leaning forward? that's a really great design!
Megashed
Yes stb, there is a 20 degree bevel on the back of the shelves to give them that cascading effect.
