estesbubba
All my side rails were that way but my front and back were flush. I don't think the offset will cause any problems.

I wonder if the mortise layout in the plans are not a tad off. That's definitely possible. Mine were flush because I ignored the plans once the mortises were cut. Once the mortises were cut I used relative dimensioning to figure out the tenon shoulders.

Janello
I'll be gluing up the base tomorrow. I got the chop attached to the leg today....working smooth! I'll update with some pics on Monday. My work computer is much easier to post pics.
Janello
15 days into the build. Got the base glued and pegged, and the chop working. Tonight I'll flip it over on the top and make it a bench. First time doing draw bore tennons. It went way smoother than I expected,,,,I now see why this is a preferred technique. Man does that really lock things up nice!

It's like putting a pad lock on your joinery. Amazing how well it works.

estesbubba
Looking great John! Yeah that draw bore is cool and you don't need clamps but I did anyway to make myself feel better. Don't forget to chop that dog mortise before attaching the tops.

I won 1250$ in the superbowl pool. I'll buy a soft maple bench when they go on sale.
Popular Post Janello
Haven't gotten a whole lot done, last couple days. I have a long weekend coming up and with any luck hope to have this finished by Monday night. I have to flatten the top....I have the chop wings to glue up and shape....deadman rail and deadman to shape....gap stop to make.... shelf to install.... and some 3/4 holes to drill in the top. It's in it's final resting place now, and with the advise of Eric, I left it off the wall. Best I can do was leave 24" of walkway behind it, but I think that will suffice. This bench has worn me out, and I'm looking forward to being done with it! I plunged full depth the entire length for the deadman cavity...then two quick swipes to clean up. Two more swipes to make it full width. And here she is in her final resting place.
Brendon_t
Looking good. I was wondering what the heck you plunged into your top for, guess it wasn't the top after all.

I second guessed myself if it was the actual bottom of the slab. I don't know why I wasn't sure of myself...I guess I seen the tail vise handle and had a moment of vertigo. Brendon_t
The spacing was so consistent I thought you had cut some sort of joinery then was wondering what king of bit would possibly make that joint in such a thick board. . Is your top still a full 4"?
Trip
The pine plank shop walls takes me back to weekends spent in my dad's shop... I always tell myself I'll go pine planks in my next shop... But it never seems to happen... Every shop's been 3/4 ply painted white myself.... Have you ever been tempted to whitewash the pine? My dad used a very thin blend of whitewash that's more translucent then pigment, but it added just that extra little bit of brightness that was helpful around the bench...

estesbubba
John that is looking great and I doubt you'll miss routing 2" deep in maple! I agree with Eric to keep it away from the wall. So far I've used the back side about as much as the front.
