Popular Post Warren Hein
After 14 years, it was time to finally make a cover for the door chime that was installed after our remodel. It came with a cheap plastic cover that I threw away before it was even installed. Several years ago when going through our firewood pile, I found a few pieces that looked to have some promising figure. I figured to make use of one of them for the panels. The sample pieces and a sketch of what I was thinking: After going over the options with my wife, we decided on the curly oak, which I sliced and book matched to make two panels. The piece had a lot of voids, but I was able to make two panels with only a few voids. Making the top was a matter of making a bent lamination. I think the top ended up being about 8 layers thick. I was happy to have it come together without any noticeable gaps on the show side. This was my first piece aside from my workbench where I made use of dovetails. The dovetails to the top are angled to match the curve. They came together OK, but I did have to glue in some thin patches in a few places where I had some gaps. After finishing, I can barely tell where I added them. For the panels, I first stabilized and filled in the voids with some CA glue, then scraped and sealed with some Amber dyed shellac to pop the grain. Sanding this dyed surface back down to knock off most of the coloring except for in the exposed end grain, everything was then given three coats of Arm-R-Seal. JosephThomas
Not sure I've ever seen a doorbell like that before. Turned out nice!
wtnhighlander
Sweet! The contrasting grain of the panel looks awsome against the dark frame.
Chestnut
Nice work that oak panel is beautiful. I really like the wood choices. I had to reread everything to verify that the top was bent lamination. Can't even tell from pictures. Was it hard to get the dovetails in a board that was laminated? Warren Hein
Making the dovetails in the bent lamination was not much more difficult than the regular half blind dovetails. The biggest issue was in securing it to a surface to allow me to chop out the waste. I ended up re-clamping it onto my bending form and I had lots of support. James H. C.
Wow that looks great! wish I had ability to make that, it looks hard! I have the same Nutone chime that came with our house 30 yrs ago. I recently refurbished it by following instructions of gentleman on youtube but now need to do something about that awful plastic cover! We don';t have a nice niche like you do either. Thanks for sharing.James
