Popular Post difalkner
This was just a test piece to make sure my file on the CNC was correct, so I grabbed some 1/2" BB before running this on more expensive Maple. Now that I have cut and finished it I may not make another one, not sure yet. I'll give this one to a friend who's on the front line fighting the virus. Woodenskye
Great work David! Now a few questions: 1) due to the darker colors, such as the stars and the medical symbol inlayed? 2) are the stripes darker simply because of the depth of cut

No sir, they are cut down about 1/8". I sealed the board with Nitrocellulose sanding sealer and then used Mohawk Van Dyke brown glazing stain over the entire board, wiped it off, then shot the semi-gloss coat of lacquer. Start to finish, from bare board on the CNC to handling the finished piece - finish dry - was less than two hours. Not too bad for a test piece. David PS - I had read the symbol is called a Medicus but have since learned it's a Caduceus. Oh, well, medical guy I a NOT! 2
wtnhighlander
David, did you cut that all with one size bit? Or do a rough pass with a larger bit and finish with a (very!) small diameter bit?
difalkner
I cut the bulk of the stripes with a 1/4" downcut spiral and did a contour cut with a 1/8" downcut spiral to tighten up the corners. The 1/8" bit made just enough difference to make it worth the bit change but it probably would have looked ok without it. The rest was cut with a 90° V-bit, 3/8" diameter.
