collinb
I'm going to be fluting some cherry for a door casing. Was wondering if there is a preference or advantage to using a jig with the wood face-up vs doing it on a router table with the wood face-down. treeslayer
I’ve done it both ways, I prefer face up, I can clamp a stop on the board and I like that the chips aren’t trapped between the wood and the table IMO
wtnhighlander
Face up lets you see what you are doing, but face down on a sturdy router table & fence can be more stable / repeatable. Its a trade-off. If you can feed the work through, no stopped cuts, I'd vote router table.
curlyoak
Since I bought the Jessem top and fence I prefer it. Previous to the Jessem I had a low-end table and fence. It left a lot to be desired.
Immortan D
I guess it depends on the situation. A template for a PC guide bushing will ensure repeatability and handle the stops. A friend of mine needed to make a single stopped flute centered on all four sides of four very narrow tapered legs. Only solution we found was to make a template, with fences on the sides so the legs fitted in like a globe.
BillyJack
I stopped using a router table whenever possible and just use a jig..
