Popular Post Chestnut
As we approach the due date there are a few odds and ends that Megan has wanted me to make for Nutmeg (our daughters code name) Coop this name is your fault by the way . The list is pretty long... but a lot of the items are pretty easy and quick. Some of the items are notes and dimensions so not every line is an item to make. The first item to get done was the display case for Megan's birthday which was posted a while ago. After I finished that the next major item was a shelf for storage and organization for some baby items in the closet in her room. So many items have been given to us and we've had to buy very few items. It's nice having a lot of friends that had kids before us. I tried to use wood that had some defects and to work around it or cut the defects off. In hindsight I'm maybe regretting using the wood for this because I really like the boxelder. The streaks of red add a lot of visual interest. Though It would be hard to make a piece of furniture out of it because the look would end up being kind of rustic and chaotic but this is a good application I guess. I didn't apply finish but just sanded the wood to 180 grit. The construction is simple dados, I held the shelves in place with brad nails and nailed on 1/4" plywood back to stop items from sliding out the back. The main intent for this shelf is just temporary to store some items. Eventually the shelf will be repurposed for something else or just given away to someone. The wood that I used was box elder harvested from our property. I've used up a good portion of the boxelder that I've milled and there isn't a ton left any more. The reddish slabs on the right are walnut that still needed a bit of drying time. Next item on the list is to make some wall hanging shelves for the children's books. I"m going to make them in dimensions that can be utilized in the future for regular novels so they aren't useless after we graduate from children's books.
Ronn W
You better get going, guy. Nutmeg will keep you out of the shop more than you think.
legenddc
Dang, that's quite the list! Knowing you I'm sure you'll churn it all out. I think my daughter was about 18 months old when I made her the kitchen step stool. If my kids could manage to not fight while on it we would still be using it (7 and 4.5). Just another thing to add to your list!

Not a chance Megan's birthday was may 13th. I was just way behind on getting it done.
Popular Post Chestnut
The next item on the list is book shelves for all the books that we've gotten. Our goal was to have something that could be hing on the wall and moved easily. Right now we plan to have the shelves closer to the ground to make them accessible to a toddler. The design that was chosen was pretty simple but also effective. The shelves were sized to hold both children's books but also be large enough to hold YA novels in the future, or other items. The shelf is made from cherry, because cherry. The Sides are about 5/8" thick all the other parts are around 1/2". Goal here was to keep visual weight low as well as physical weight. I attached the bottom to the sides with hand cut dovetails because i honestly couldn't think of a better way to attach the sides to the bottoms. Maybe finger joints but that has too much visual contrast. These pins are pretty small so they disappear. To mount to the wall I used a keyhole bit through the middle of the top support. To make access for the screws I marked the rough locations for access and used a forester bit to create a start point. This is 1 shelf of 2. I have another that is 75% complete that is identical. I probably have 10 hours of work into both of them so far so in total I'd guess that they will take 12-13 hours, so a quick project. Finish is shellac. At some point in the distant future I may top the shellac with something more durable if needed. 2
Popular Post Chestnut
Finished another couple items. First was the 2nd bookshelf. Both already full, I'll probably need to make a 3rd and a 4th at some point. Megan wanted some dividers for the closet so she could sort some items by age/size. I cut the shape on a 2" thick slab and then sliced off 3/16" thick slices. Sanded smooth, no finish. I also made some dividers for the drawers on the dresser but I'll post those in the dresser thread.
