Coop
Nice work Sam! Turn those bad boys into end grain next time...when they're for mom and not mom's friend. Eric, What is the best way to make an end grain board; take the board that he made and cut it into strips across the grain, rotate it 45 deg. and glue it back up? Eric.
Yep. And flip the pieces end for end if you want a checkerboard pattern.
wdwerker
Your boards look great ! Crosscut into strips, Rotate it 90 degrees and buy a drum sander ! Flattening an end grain board is a chore without one. It can be done with a router sled set up and lots of disk sanding but it is not easy. I just started a couple of cutting boards for some friends and I am just doing edge grain for them. Quite a few years ago I built a large end grain board for my niece, it was a labor of love but it took many hours even with my drum sander. This one should end up about 16 x 20 . The other one is going to be around 18 x 24 so it can fit over a sink.
Southwood
Cooper here is a video Marc did back in the day http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/videos/how-to-make-a-butcher-block-cutting-board/
Coop
Boy, that video did go way back. Even in that one small part where Marc had on a suit, he still had on his trademark tee shirt. Thanks for the advice(s).
Chuck Melton
Crosscut into strips, Rotate it 90 degrees and buy a drum sander ! I ran an end grain cutting board through the planer once. Once.

el capitán
How did it look coming out the other side? My guess would be, like a blur.
Chuck Melton
It tore out a good chunk of the rear edge... I ended up having to trim like 3/4" off.
wdwerker
I bet it made enough noise to cause an orifice to pucker as well !
