Mpride1911
I just got this pair of Stanley Sweethearts today. The low angle block plane seems to work great, but the low angle jack plane digs heavily on the right. I couldn't adjust that out of the blade at all, and after looking up close at the bottom, I see that the it is severely canted to one side. This is my first quality plane and I know that there's tuning involved, but this seems outside the limits of acceptable to me. Any thoughts? not sure how visible it is in the photo. Tpt life
I cannot answer your question but easily see the issue. I have seen this in other planes in that price range.
Eric.
Is there schmutz on the bed, or does it sit like that because the casting isn't flat? That's nasty looking.
Jim Harvey
Is it a real Stanley? I have a Craftsman block plane that has the bed machined so one side of the blade sat higher than the other. Took lots of filing to get it to work. Mpride1911
I wiped the blade and bedding area clean, but the casting itself it canted. Not sure if sanding and filing is appropriate or not. I just got it today, so it's still possible to return it.
Popular Post Pete Staehling
I'd send it back either for an exchange or a refund.
derekcohen
This represents the challenge area of BU planes of all types - that is, achieving a square bed. It is really not that unusual for them to be a little out of line. Having said that, it is not your responsibility to sort out the manufacturers issue. Send it back (unless you believe you are capable of doing a perfect job).Regards from PerthDerek
TerryMcK
Send it back for a refund and pay a little more and get a Veritas
Mpride1911
The Veritas was the first plane that I looked at. Unfortunately it is outside of my budget. I'm going to send this one back today. If the replacement isn't satisfactory, I'll send it back for a refund and then probably wait until I can get the Veritas.
Gilgaron
I recall on Schwarz's blog he commented on getting a defective jack plane from Stanley for review. He got it replaced with a better one as I recall, but I'm sure there are plenty of the defective ones floating around. You could contact Stanley customer service if it seems that all of your vendor's stock is the defective stuff.
Mpride1911
I sent it back yesterday and the new one is supposed to arrive tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.

Mpride1911
The new one has arrived in the mail, and everything looks squared away. It's clearly not crooked like the last one.
