SawDustB
Is this for real? Sattire???? My sarcasm meter is fully broken on this one lol Well, the banter about the coasters was satire... the actual project is making a couple of picture frames.

SawDustB
Very minor update... I had a few minutes in the shop, so I trimmed everything to exact length and hogged away the waste for the dovetails. Next up is actually putting the dovetail bit in and finishing the joinery. SawDustB
So this has been way too long since I got any shop time. I was able to cut the joinery yesterday, although I still need to finesse the fit a little on the center dovetails. You can get a better idea of how the frame will go together. I also need to shorten the sliding dovetail pins since the sockets are a bit shorter to avoid being visible. With any luck, I can get it glued up in the next couple of days. wtnhighlander
Looks nice! You are braver than I, to use such a visible dovetail.

This is one instance where the hand cut dovetail might have been easier. Getting the router table dialed in closely enough to make this work has been a giant pain. It's going in the same room as the other frame I made with the dovetailed corners, so I felt like I needed one here to tie them together. I still haven't managed to do the dry fit yet, so it's still possible the whole thing is firewood. We'll see.
shaneymack
Very cool! It's going to be awesome with that dovetail. Don't screw it up ! LOL Sent from my SM-N910W8 using Tapatalk
Popular Post SawDustB
So, not the worst fit I could have had, but the sliding dovetails aren't perfect. I think it'll be OK after glue up. Here's the dry fit. I'll still be routing the rabbet for the glass before assembly.

Popular Post SawDustB
I had a minute so I got the second frame glued (and roughly cleaned up). Here is where they are right now. Next up is scraping and sanding, then routing a chamfer on the front and rabbet on the back for the glass. My older daughter got a hold of the first frame and decided to have some fun with it.
wdwerker
A word of warning to any pallet wood users. Some imported pallets are treated with pesticides to prevent the importation of bugs ( which can be a big environmental danger ) ! I have smelled pesticides on those 3x3 skids from under bundles of imported plywood too. I have gotten some nice exotic wood 3x3 from under imported lumber bundles as well . SawDustB
I had a few minutes between yesterday and today to get the chamfers routed, route out for the glass, and square up the corners. Aside from final sanding, adding the keyhole to hang them, and finish, these are getting pretty close.
Ryan Grondin
How much for the coasters? I love custom, one of a kind projects. Nice frames.. Pallet wood = Fool's Gold. lol
Popular Post SawDustB
Here are the frames after 4 light coats of lacquer. The finish turned out well. I gave them a light scrape after the first coat to remove bubbles, raised fibers, etc. Plexiglass is cut for the frames, along with hardboard for the back. As soon as my wife picks the pictures to go in them, I'll assemble and hang them.
Popular Post SawDustB
I figured I should add one last picture to finish off the journal. These are the frames with pictures up on the wall of my daughter's room. She's only 1, so I'm not convinced she even really noticed, but my wife likes them so that's what really matters.

Popular Post Brendon_t
I know we rag on pallet wood a lot but I was walking into the school where our football team was playing today and the dust collector was running off of the wood shop and the doors were open. I walked in to say hi and saw a few 10' stacks of pallets. Started talking to the shop teacher (who was there on a Saturday cleaning and sharpening planer blades) he said that their whole curriculum is circled around recycling pallets because the school pulled all funding for materials so all they are left with is what they can find or force the students to pay $100 each per class. I told the guy I would bag up a bunch of my cut offs and bring them in if they could use them. He was super happy and thankful. Next time before you fill the green can or fire pit, we could consider giving them to a shop and saving those poor pallets..
SawDustB
Also to be fair, this stuff isn't exactly your average pallet wood. It came from 8'x4' pallets we use at my work to receive sheet metal on. I tossed the actual slats, and made these from some of the cross members. I have a few other pieces that I might use to build a saw bench. I've come to the conclusion that it wasn't worth the effort to remove the nails or what it did to my poor planer knives, so that'll be the last of it for me.
