Nobody said that Coyote's sample was chestnut; the chestnut discussion was a lighthearted side comment about Chestnut's guesses. I was being tongue in cheek with my "serious" reply. Sorry. Well, my bad as well. I wasn't paying close attention.

mat60
So have we decided what wood it is?

On 1/21/2018 at 4:15 PM, phinds said: I think birch is the correct ID. You could send me a sample for confirmation. The guess of chestnut is WAYYYY off. This wood is diffuse porous and chestnut is ring porous. Not even close to being similar.
Popular Post wdwerker
Phinds uses lots of words that I remember from graduate level botany. Can't remember every single term but there are 40 different terms/levels of hair on plants and leaves. Just as many to describe end grain and connective tissues. The man who's hobby is collecting wood samples from all over the world and worrying about minute differences between this species and that is as close to a " free expert opinion " as we're gonna get. If you can't trust his opinion this has become a waste of pixels ! < grin> 3
Coop
I was only kidding about about nuts being or not being chestnut, or who called it chestnut in the first place.

Pondhockey
Well, I admit, I chuckled. But the teller is correct - it's not that funny :-)
drzaius
I thought it was hilarious & actually laughed out loud. But then my whole family thinks my sense of humor is a little way off.

If you don't do it, I will. Don't worry about the end of the piece, since I always do my own cleanup on that.
