I can only speak to IPE but agree I didn't feel it was splintery...now the wenge I am using on this jewelry box that SH$% gives splintery a whole new meaning :)

All the curves in that little table and nary a splinter. One curve had a edge crack off but it glued back on perfectly. Any wood can do that. I think there is quite a few trees in the family that all get marketed as Ipe. Bound to be variances between species.

Everything over 3000lbs janka will be splintery, fibers are stronger than the bond between them. But if you can get cumaru/almendro (often sold for decking/flooring as well), it's a little less splintery than ipe.

Cumaru is also very attractive & weathers well.
