Popular Post Gary Beasley
I went out to visit Spanky last monday and came home with a truck bed full of bowl turning wood with a promise of making him some nice bowls from it. Most turners know the raw wood cant be used right away but needs roughng out to get it to dry quicker. I was working on that last week, got three of the chunks rounded and cored and in the bags to dry. Had to put it on pause to work on a job for the neighbor making birthday presents for a son. I got a black walnut offcut roughed and cored out a second bowl from the inside, and got three bowls cored each from a butternut and ambrosia maple chunk. That butternut is some stringy stuff!
Spanky
Gary I like the curly walnut piece. The ambrosia chunk looks huge on the lathe.
Gary Beasley
Yeah it was a good 17” across. Took it down to about 16” getting it round.

Its not far from an area my wife and I like to camp, just need to improve the mattress in the popup so it doesnt kill our backs. Thats about the prettiest piece of countryside Ive seen in a long time.
RichardA
Ole Spanky has a hell of an operation, and a beautiful place. The view from his front porch is drop dead beautiful. I'm about 20 minutes north of him, you're welcome to drop in at any time.
Popular Post Gary Beasley
Two of the chunks Ricky gave me was butternut. I cored these and got several rough bowls from them. This is one of the smallest from the center. It split while drying for some reason, I put some CA into the crack and put it in the press to hold it together. Afterwards while sanding I put some Titebond Translucent into the crack, rubbed sawdust into it and ran the sander over it to pack more dust in. I was going to this much effort just to see how it finished. Sanded to 320 and Osmo Polyx worked into it and buffed the stuff looks good, even shows a bit of quilt figure in it. Im amazed at how light the wood is after drying, almost feels lighter than poplar but stronger wood. The big bowls should look really good.
Byrdie
I like the figure in that bowl and the light color. Nice work - I know you mention a defect but I'm having a hard time picking it up!
Gary Beasley
Its the obvious dark line running across the upper third of the bowl.

Seriously, on first look that just looked like part of the grain (technically it is) to me.
Gary Beasley
Theres a Japanese tradition celebrating broken objects repaired as a thing of beauty. Maybe this fits that category. Better than saying “I fixed a screwup”!

Popular Post Gary Beasley
Ive been playing with some rotten wood these past couple of days. The little dark colored bowl is from an old tree root that was dug up when my new septic field was put in. I sanded it to 150 and put Osmo on it to give it a softer feel, still working on building the finish. The other is a piece of badly bug eaten spalted cherry. It has a hole through one side but the wild figure and colors make it worth finishing out. This is a first coat of poly which will be sanded back after it cures fully and another coat applied to get an even gloss.
Gary Beasley
I finished building a slow speed driver for my lathe so I can rotate the piece with finish on it so it doesnt run while setting up. The goal is a speed of around 16 rpm with the proper viscosity finish.
Mark J
Is that the treadmill motor you mentioned at AAW? Also what is the purpose of the big white wheel? Spray protection?
Gary Beasley
Its a flat vacuum chuck, has an offset press blanket glued to the surface to let the bowl dig in and seal up.
