Popular Post Von
I've been documenting this project over in the WWG, but it seems more lively over here, so thought I'd drop an update. The back story is my wife wants a small, short table to go by her recliner to hold her morning cappuccino. The design comes from a plant stand she likes the look of. I added a top to it and a second set of cross members to hold the top. The original set of cross members migrated up for aesthetics. Fast forward, and I got through the glue up of the legs and cross pieces today. I'm happy with one exception: one joint which didn’t want to close up. I’m not sure why as the problem didn’t appear in my dry fit. I’m guessing either clamping pressure on the cross pieces tweaked things or I have something stuck in the joint or the mortise. I thought about backing out during the glue up, but decided since the joint isn’t going to be that visible under the table top, to go ahead and patch it up. Next step is to cut the table top.
wtnhighlander
Nice little table! Bet it's going to finish out beautifully.

Not sure yet, it will be a joint decision with the wife. She likes matte finishes. Will see light use with the occasional hot mug. Suggestions welcome. Popular Post Ronn W
I would go with Satin Arm-R Seal. Stand up to moderate heat and wears well. See my reponse to question about middle of table bread board end. That table has 3 coats ARS and the grandkids haven't damamge ti significantly yet.
Von
Scene from the shop today: after cutting the top, my wife asked if I could make it 1/2" smaller in diameter. I said sure, adjusted the cutter, and made this off cut. I figured it would fall apart on grain lines as I cut, but it's still a resilient piece of wood. Not sure what to do with it...
Popular Post B1rdhunter
Save it for when she decides that she would like it 1/2 inch bigger.
JohnG
Looks great! Nobody will see that gap. Osmo PolyX would also be a good option.

This was a great opportunity for saying “Yes, dear” and then spending a couple hours in the shop doing other things, then bring the top back and saying “here you go!”

wtnhighlander
Looks like the boss approves! Nice little side table, hope you don't mind if the design is appropriated.
