Von
I found the WTO site nearly unusable with ads, but it costs someone (Marc?) time, effort, and dollars to run it, so I was happy to pay to support it (I think it's $10/year).
BillyJack
I was on Sawmillcreek a month after it started. It was fine till it stopped allowing you to see uploaded pictures unless you are a payed member. I moved on… I left Patriot Woodworker awhile back because they simply don’t recognize professionals. The Router Forums was a nice forum but has mainly gone CNC.. Portable routing seems to be gone.. Lumberjocks seems to house all the woodworking criminals. It’s cleaning up though.. Woodworkingtalk I complained this weekend because it’s becoming too YouTube. Less and less woodworking and more jus5 watch the YouTube videos… in my opinion woodworking forums are changing so much, you have to work or pay to be a member.. LOML came in to see what was so funny ;-) I don't think $10 a year is going to break anyone.

So you want someone to spend their time and money to set up and maintain the site, but not take any opportunities to cover (probably only a portion of) their costs? Any forum that I’ve seen that is free and has no ads is either a painfully clunky site or is run by someone that’s willing to throw a lot of their money at it, which isn’t sustainable long term.
BillyJack
I think the easier a site is to navigate , the more they want to use it.
BillyJack
I think in the beginning it was a lot about the work, but ove4 that last few years it’s been more about the shop. For some once the shop is done, they’re done. They can’t go forward.. But I guess I’ve said my peace
Tpt life
I don’t know any young cabinet makers. I don’t know any young furniture makers. That’s my location, not universal. Just thinking of the ones I know, they aren’t interested in online forum discussions.
BillyJack
Its changed. It was a good trade at one time. Now shops have many workers that would move on for better pay. It just doesn’t have anything to offer anymore..
Popular Post RichardA
I see only a few here actually doing and posting woodwork. When I first came here everyone had postings of the work they were doing and proud of it, now there's just a few. I don't post anymore due to health issues and a hand or two that often are uncontrolable. As a matter of fact, I've sold of 70% of my shop., And now I'm just a jealous observer, with the ability to comment. Enjoy young'uns.
Tom King
I want to do woodwork, but have too much other stuff that is higher on the priority list. I like watching skilled woodworkers building things on forum threads, but don't watch youtube videos of them working. They're all too much talk for me. I don't want to spend time watching and listening to someone talk. I don't mind paying a few bucks to support what forums I participate on. I certainly don't expect the ones operating the ones I participate on to do it for nothing. The price has always seems unexplainably cheap to me. Also, I'm with the ones that know of no young ones these days.
curlyoak
A privilege to pay my part. And a bargain to boot!
Popular Post Ron Swanson Jr.
Maybe this is just because I'm not the sharpest tool in the drawer, but until i read through this post, i had no idea that there even WAS a paid access option. I'll gladly pay my share. The ability to consult more experienced craftsman is incredibly valuable. And this seems like a nice and supportive environment which is rare in ANY online environment these days. Not sure where to go to pay, but I'll figure it out 2
