bushwacked
What's the rule of 4?
Eric.
A sacrifice to the OCD Gods. Clamps must be bought in sets of multiples of four. It's a rule that I made up seemingly inexplicably but it should be followed by everyone for the obvious reason.
Raefco
What's the rule of 4? not exactly sure, Im new here, someone stated earlier during the "clamp sale"portion of this discussion, when ordering or buying clamps it alway had to be done in multiples of 4… after glueing up some panels I noticed I had 8-24"clamps and 5-36" evoking some sort of curse on myself…
Tpt life
Is that why some of my stuff looks like crap? I have three of each clamp? What about Fibonacci?
ChetlovesMer
Eric, Personally I think the rule of 4 is a bunch of hoo-ha! I subscribe to the rule of 2. I build tons of stuff where the joinery holds it in one direction and the clamps hold it in the other. That being said, I have at least 4 of nearly every clamp I own. ..Kev
I only have 3 sizes in my shop - I have ten 30", ten 48", and two 70" So, the rule of 4 was never part of the way I bought.
wdwerker
Oh you gotta have 12" 18" and 24" parallel clamps to finish the set ! I have a couple of 97" ones that are really handy a couple of times a year.
..Kev
The 18s are on my list for sure
bushwacked
Soto start my collection I am getting in on the 50% off sale soon and was thinking 4 30" and maybe 2 18" and 2 48" ??? Not sure where to start it off at ...
Raefco
I use the 24"s most, since I usually have pipe around I am thinking about getting some pipe clamps, as you cam make them any length you want.

Not sure where to start it off at ... I'd skip the 18s and get 2 more 48s. I use my 30s more than any other but, when you need the longer ones, the shorter ones don't help.

I agree with this some what, depends on what a guy is going to build and how much space he has, 30" clamps on a cutting board could be a bit awkward on a small bench against the wall. wdwerker
I think I would start with 4 -48" and 4 -30" . The shorter clamps are quite handy but you can do so much more with the mid size ones. Casework and furniture quickly gets over 24" and it's not that hard to tolerate a longer clamp sticking out. I didn't have any short parallel clamps until 6 or 7 years ago. My first Bessey's are almost 25 years old.

Regardless of what you're building, you're probably going to build something that requires longer clamps. If you don't have them, you're hooped. Yes, the longer ones are a PITA on the small stuff but, they still work. The short ones never work on the bigger projects.
Tpt life
Many cheaper options will make do for shorter needs. Spend your good money on the longer clamps.

AstroDave
With the limited supplies of these Jet clamps at WoodCraft I am beginning to envision a recreation of the "TurboMan" scene.. http://klipd.com/watch/jingle-all-the-way/turboman-sold-out-scene
JimF
Rockler will have the door set (two 40", two 24" and blocks) for $134.99 11/28 - 12/1. I'm not sure if it's just B&M or online too. Jet sent me an email that looked like all of their clamps will be 50% off. I need a few more to max out my rack.

JimF
Thanks! Yeah, I'm just getting back into the garage, but most of my projects have always been music related. Lots of speakers.

Nice.. My shop was originally built as my recording studio so, sounds like we've had similar paths..

ResidentEvil
[Rubs hands together with an evil grin] Just finished my expense report for mileage reimbursement for about $300 and paid my cell phone bill with a gift card...that means almost $500 freed up this month.
