wdwerker
I was digging through my personal stash today. 4/4 Honduran mahogany 22" wide x 119" long perfectly flat but there is a 6" crack in one end. I think it's been up there close to 20 years. Thinking about how big of a chest I could make with a single board. I will try to get a picture but it's close to the bottom of the pile and at least 10 ft off the floor.
Popular Post Coop
Darn Dave, you've got a heck of a stash. Mine consist of just extras from a project or some of those that I just couldn't resist. They are all stacked together on three wall shelves with the type of wood written on the outside edge. My pride and joy are four stacks of 6/4 to 12/4 walnut stacked, stickered and banded that have been drying for only four months. I look at it about once a week, then look at the calendar. This ritual doesn't get it dried any faster I've noticed.
davewyo
Thanks Ken. Unfortunately, I seem to be one of those hoarders. And when you couple that with my penchant for "letting the wood decide what it wants to be"...I end up with small hoards which have no destiny as of yet. I got the Flame Birch "just because it is pretty", and then there's free shipping (which is a killer for me, it just adds fuel to the fire, so to speak). On the other hand, I don't know if others find it this way, but I don't add 20% to my lumber order when I'm trying to make something. I find that if you're concentrating on grain match, you had better think about 50% extra stock and a lot of leftovers.
Brendon_t
My stash is literally non existent. My 1/2 of a single car garage doesn't lend itself well to lumber storage. I buy what I need for a project and use it. I do have quite a cool offcut assortment but I wouldn't call it lumber. . Or a stash. .
dlgWoodWork
I will try to get a few pics tomorrow. I have probably 600+ board feet total. Cherry, Walnut, red oak, maple, and a few small amounts of other stuff. And then there is the turning stock with pen blanks.
Coop
I too have a couple of boards that I bought to keep someone else from buying them. They don't have a name yet but someday a project will adopt them!
bushwacked
Wish I had actual lumber stash. At the moment I'm a project by project lumber user sadly
jtcherk
Aside from 4 shelves, 4 tubs and 1 pile of mix matched wood, I have approx. 20pcs of 5/4 douglas fir x 14' long that was cut about 4 years ago. I really find it hard to get rid of any wood, regardless of size because as soon as I do, I could have used it. I like to re-claim dirty old wood of any species and add it into a project. Hardwood timbers is a favorite.
TerryMcK
I've got lots of species, oak, mahogany etc. But I also have some shorter lengths I bought from a retiring cabinet maker that she had in her shop for a number of years. I came to select a few pieces the other day for a shop cabinet I'm making but there wasn't enough matching cherry, or beech in those piles. So I found some black walnut but again not quite enough in width so had to glue bits together to get enough. Don't you just hate that? I guess those pieces of cherry and beech will have to stay in the stash until they are thrown out!
wdwerker
Cleaned off my wide mahagony stash.

wdwerker
King sized 4 poster bed and maybe a tall chest. There is a plank of 8/4 at the bottom of the stack that is 15"wide by 15 ft long I was thinking to use for the bed rails . Already have 4 rice carved posts, all in Honduran mahogany.
RichardA
Getting a "stash" in my shop means moving machines several times daily, but right now I have about 40 bd ft of red oak about 25 of white oak 15 of curly maple and a couple walnut boards. I'd take pics, but all you'd see is a ton of equipment in the way. Oh I forgot, I've got a mix of red oak and poplar that's over 100 years old that I slip a piece or two in every one of my builds, there's maybe 25 ft of that.

I don't know about you, but some of the Flame Birch boards I got from that BF 'project kit' are absolutely breathtaking. I bought a ton of it, but it's all so pretty that I don't want to even saw any of the boards (unless it's a resaw). I just keep thinking of using it all for one giant project. So they sit. :0
Eric.
I'd go out in my shop and take some pics of my stash, but I'm too afraid of developing testecicles. Maybe this spring.

It can't be seen at night, and with man eating shrimp in the moat, Terry is safe from attack, and always has a great meal!

I've been working up some finish samples to see if I can find a method that pops the figure without altering the natural color too much. TerryMcK
Terry, You're making walnut cabinets for your shop or in your shop? Must have been a typo Yes Ken a walnut cabinet for the shop. It's only the sides of the door, drawer front and edge banding for an accent. The vast majority of it is baltic birch. I am doing my wall hanging plane and tool cabinet in homage to H.O. Studley so thought a fancy wood for the door and drawers would be an advertisement to visitors (and potential customers) to the shop.
