Popular Post bushwacked
Going to build the John peters bookcase for this one ... got all the wood and ply needed ... QS sapele for base and top The 2 boxes built and checked to make sure everything lined up on edges. So far so good. attached one side panel to hide all the edges. Going to attach the other one today and mill the face frame too hopefully.
wdwerker
Looking good so far ! I checked out Jon Peters video for the project. The frame & molding process on the back is similar to the face of my mantle, just bigger. Adding or subtracting moldings around the top & bottom & back can transform the appearance to very traditional or simple clean modern. The finished back will allow it to be used as a room divider.
mat60
Very nice start to your project. I was just looking at your workbench and thinking how nice it would be to have one something like it because of the type of work I do.it. Looks like great storage also. Like it. Yep I went ahead and framed out the back too since I had enough poplar. It should look nice all painted and then I can work on the top. 8 hours ago, mat60 said: Very nice start to your project. Yes first project with the workbench outfeed and it was great!! Could have everything on it and still cut on the tablesaw and not have to move everything. Toooons of storage too. I still have a free cabinet for stuff. Not sure what to put in there yet. Todays progress .. the back dryfit ... the front about to get face framed. front face frame done ... went kind simple on the back. Mainly because I was low on poplar. But I think it will still look good. Also for the face frames I was showed the pencil trick when I first started and still use it for almost all my face frames. It help cut a small back bevel to help inserting the frame material between 2 other pieces. Now to see about this whole painting thing haha. Hopefully next weekend I can start/finish the top. At least that is the plan.
Coop
On your pencil trick, I almost didn’t see the pencil since it and the insert are yellow. Doesn’t that leave a gap everywhere except on the very face of the boards?

With this getting painted i don’t think it will be an issue... hopefully haha.

The pencil trick is interesting. The minor gap would bug me to no end though. But if you are painting I guess you can touch it up with caulk and I could live with that.

bushwacked
Finished up the first round of painting. Waiting till the top and base are on to figure out if i want to scuff it up or not. Bow into building the base and top for this ... a quick mock-up just to see the contrast of the top. poplar base built and fitted ... now to add the sapele wrapping ... anybody like a little twist with their wood lol. The pic doesn’t do it justice. working on miters and getting it fitted a close up of the 7* angle I put on the base. Stops about 1/2” or so from the top.
Popular Post bushwacked
Finishing the top and base now ... and im trying to water bucket for oil rags and gloves. How do I know they are ready to be thrown away? Normally I just put a brick on top and when they are hard I throw away ...
wdwerker
I just spread the rags out flat & drape them over a metal rail outside to dry. The concern is the heat generated by curing oil finishes can lead to spontaneous combustion. Wadded up with no air flow is the issue. You can let gloves dry the same way, just make sure the wet oil is on the outside. Inside out gloves w oil removes airflow & traps heat. You could also drape rags over a rock or concrete block outside.

I just saw the bucket and figured I would try this route haha. Turning out to be somewhat of a pain since now they are still in a bucket of water lol I think I will empty it out and just lay them out to dry like I always have ... live and learn and try new things haha
