Popular Post Tom King
Will try to shorten long story: My Wife is a dog breeder. We train the puppies to pine pellet litter. During play time, by 6 weeks, they are running loose in the house, and go to the litter boxes, with no accidents. People come from all over the country to get them. The pandemic has driven the demand for puppies out of the roof, so we've bred every dog we have. We use a specific litter box. We keep some on hand, so people getting puppies can get one, if they didn't order one by the time they pick up their puppy. Chewy had them on sale, so I ordered 10 of them, with free shipping. Pictures tell this story. I'm actually glad to get the cardboard, because I use it in the mechanic shop. This should be about a two years supply.

Coop
Maybe they get a break in shipping if shipped by volume?
drzaius
Wow! There's a highly flawed shipping department. That kind of nonsense just isn't sustainable. We discovered that wood pellet litter for our cats a couple of years ago. It is so far above any other kind of litter that we've tried. I'd never use anything else. No dust, no smell, super easy to clean the boxes
Coop
Tom, hypothetically speaking, assuming you keep a pup for your own, does your wife continue to use these boxes or do they eventually learn to go outside. Asking as a new puppy owner.
Tom King
They always get to the point that they prefer to go outside, but when they're little, they can't, and shouldn't go up, and down steps, and have to go often. It works out great for people living in cities. Two of these 21 puppies are going to NYC, and live on upper floors. They have a room in our house where they can use litter boxes if it's pouring rain. We have a big covered patio that the boys have access to, and I have materials for building another one for the girls, but not enough time. The are small dogs, and only get 10 to 12 pounds, as adults. Here are the pellets we use: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/tractor-supply-pine-pellet-stall-bedding-40-lb-2181006?store=1235&cm_mmc=feed-_-GoogleShopping-_-Product-_-2181006&gclid=Cj0KCQiA0-6ABhDMARIsAFVdQv-JbVH_nOCuzmB04ZubMt6--hCt503SF2fjLJjsJEMO3uKdrI_sGFMaAq-SEALw_wcB It used to just be called equine bedding, but when they found out about our system for the puppies, they added small animals to the bags. Chestnut
That is absurd. Well i guess we know who is making the money. The cardboard sales guy. Though i bet the package handlers weren't complaining either.
JohnG
Likely due to clueless higher-ups setting performance goals based solely on the number of packages shipped out or similar. Or they don’t treat the employees well enough for them to care or use their brains at all.
G Ragatz
That's very strange. We order from Chewy regularly, and the shipments we received are always packed very efficiently. I wonder if these were packed by a third party - maybe the manufacturer (still no excuse). Everything we receive from Chewy has their logo printed all over the box, but these seem to be plain corrugated.
BonPacific
They may have pre-packaged the litter boxes for quick shipping (important now that Amazon has popularized 1- or 2-day shipping), or even drop-shipped these, and simply don't assume many people will be buying more than one at a time. They may also have come from several different warehouses depending on how Chewy handles their logistics. Silly from the consumer perspective, but when you go digging there's often some pretty specific reasons these companies package stuff the way they do. Tpt life
Yeah, how many people buy multiples at once? That is likely a product specific question. Someone plays the odds and lost this time.
Coop
I don’t understand how they can ship an $18.00 item for free and it would cost you or me $18.00 to ship it.
JohnG
Volume shipping discounts are pretty significant. Losing money on shipping for some orders is also just part of the cost of doing business these days.
Coop
Yep, from our pockets to theirs. We pay for them to be of billionaire status!
Tom King
Each box was about six times the volume of one that could have been used to enclose one litter box. That pile of cardboard is larger than it looks. Laid out, it is over 8 feet long. All those litter boxes could have gone in one of these cardboardboxes, and ten, or 12 more. The little box truck that the Fedex driver came in was about half full with just this order.
