Shop Stools

Anyone have any shop stools they'd recommend or decide they're a complete waste of space? I think I need to get one with a back so I don't have to worry about my almost 4 year old falling off it but I'm hoping to tuck it under the bench when not in use.

I have some Home Depot gift cards and unless there's a hidden part of their website that sells quality hand tools I'm a little low on ideas of how to spend them. Was also thinking an air cleaner, pin nailer, or retractable extension cord.

I have on I got of off Amazon that I have been happy with and its been almost five years now.  It raises and lowers hydraulically.  I want to say it was about $120-130 but I wanted to be doable and last so I was fine with the price.   I actually did my search using Dental and Medical office stools hoping that would maybe have a better standard to their quality.   I do remember them having models that had the back rest but I wasn't looking for that feature so I didn't really pay attention to them.

I have a wooden folding chair that came with the house I bought 30 years ago. It serves a purpose and gets use. This topic reminds me of my learning experience of my informal apprenticeship. The boss had an old bar stool that swiveled. When he was talking to a customer he would use his table saw as a desk sitting on the barstool. The barstool also doubled as a tool to help him spray paint on doors and drawers taking advantage of the swivel. It was covered in paint.

I've been hoping to find a free or cheap stool I could use but I don't think that will happen until I buy something. Making a stool would be cool but would take time that I don't have at the moment. Would be a nice way to prototype something in the future.

I see Harbor Freight has some with good reviews, maybe I'll check them out next time I'm close to one.

FWIW, when I was working in my garage, I kept a cheap wooden stool, counter height, no moving parts or back, for when I needed a moment off my feet. I found that with some ballast across the lower rungs, and a couple of hand-screw clamps, it made a very servicable work platform for power carving with an angle grinder. Easy to take outside so the dust could roam freely.

I don't keep a stool in my tiny workshed now, its SRO in there! ;)

  • 1 month later...

saw a video of a guy making a adjustable stool and he used a leg leveler for scaffolding https://www.amazon.com/Metaltech-M-MBSJP24H-Adjustable-Leveling-Jack/dp/B0065DKKPG/ref=sr_1_7?crid=9XBX355GRYSZ&dchild=1&keywords=scaffolding+legs+adjustable&qid=1633127728&sprefix=scaffolding+leg%2Caps%2C233&sr=8-7 I was going to make one someday. And I just found a video of someone making one I don't think its the one I remember though
