Gary Beasley
Wife wants to do a road trip, Im looking at touring through the Cherohala Skyway from Tellico Plains, Tn to see fall colors. Anybody familiar with what else is worth seeing along that route?
wtnhighlander
I'm going out on a limb, and saying just about everything on that route is worth seeing! Honestly, I've never driven that particular bit of roadway, but used to spend a lot of weekends driving the Blue Ridge parkway. There is no lack of wonderful scenery in those mountains, but as for attractions other that natural ones, I wouldn't expect too much. Coop
I wish we had been able to visit a little further east into Tennessee when we were there but circumstances didn’t permit. I would love to go back. And folks where we did visit are really great!
Chestnut
I was in that area in 2017 for the solar eclipse. The lake at Indian boundary is quite pretty. Huckleberry Knob was very popular for the eclipse. Bald river Falls was very pretty and would be great with fall colors. The creek the road follows to bald river falls was also a good drive gave some great views of the creek. I also thought Fontana Dam was worth the drive but that is off of the tail of the dragon not the Cherohala Skyway. Hope your not in a hurry. The roads are very windy, it took 3 hours to go 40 miles as the crow flies.
Popular Post Gary Beasley
We drove to Bryson City and rode the train today, had their “Shine and Dine” ride. Sampled moonshine and had barbeque during the ride. Very rainy first half of the ride, going back the sun came out. Going to try the skyway on the way home, hoping for a bit of a break in the rain tomorrow by the time we get in the high grounds. Thats blueberry flavored shine One of the cars on the train. They made them elegant back then!

Popular Post Gary Beasley
We did make it to the Skyway, it was raining most of the way and quite a bit of mist and fog. I did get a few shots on the Nikon and a few on the Iphone camera. Deep Creek area Lake overlook Got to revisit Bald River Falls. I was able to sit the camera on one of the concrete pylons on the bridge and shoot at 1/5 second @f/16 with the EI set at 100.
wtnhighlander
Thanks for sharing these, Gary. The mountains are my favorite vacation spot, but Covid has kept us away for a couple of years now, and I miss seeing all that.
legenddc
My inlaws had a place at Deep Creek until a few years ago. Miss having that place and all the beautiful scenery up there.
pkinneb
So this is TN? Looks like an awesome place for a convertible road trip
Gary Beasley
The highest elevations on the Skyway are in N. Carolina. After hitting 5300 feet or so it drops to about half that by the time you get to Tennessee.

I loved driving the roads in my WRX, Megan on the other hand got somewhat sick of my driving. I'd love to go back there by myself. 1
wtnhighlander
Adding to Drew's comment, these roads are definitely more fun for drivers, than passengers. May be why you see so many motorcycles.
Coop
Coinciding with Drew’s trip as well, I’m jealous of the water falls. Still on my short bucket list is to see one. On the three opportunities that I’ve had, there was no water flowing. One was at Fall Creek Falls State Park in Tennessee that @Spankytook my wife and I to see. You would think with a name like that but no, just barely a trickle. He did take us to another area where we could see from a distance, discharge water from a power plant flowing over some rocks. Hope you guys continue to enjoy your trips.

Late spring is the best time. Water is usually flowing a lot more that time of year. Niagra falls is easy and accessible, wait until it's easier to go to Canada, and bring your passport. The view is much better from our northern neighbor's side. Then take a trip to lee valley.
