Popular Post Robby W
Sorry I haven't been here in awhile. We purchased a house in Yadkinville, NC and to my surprise, our house in San Marcos, CA sold very quickly. The San Marcos house needs quite a bit of work, so I thought it would take awhile to sell, but I didn't even have to list it, just word of mouth to sell it. And we got our desired price. The moving van will be here Sept. 22nd to start their part of the packing and should drive away on Sept. 24th. We will drive to Phoenix the first night and do about 500-600 miles a day until we pull up to our house in NC. We did get a nice surprise: The NC house was carpeted and my wife's walker doesn't work well on it. My daughter, who lives near there, pulled up some of the carpet and found out that the house has cherry and oak hardwood floors. We are getting them refinished and are good to go. Now, to get on topic. I am starting to disassemble the shop and I had several people ask me to document the move. We are using Allied Van Lines for the move. I have to pack the garage and disassemble the tablesaw island, but most of it will just be saran wrapped and pushed onto the truck. I took all of my tools in my tool cabinet, sprayed them down with CRC 3-36 rust preventative, wrapped them in packing paper and reused a crate my son had made for another use. All of my hand tools fit into the crate. My son added a set of Two Cherries bench chisels and Phiel carving chisels to the collection. Everything went into this one crate and the lid is screwed on. That should slow down sticky fingers. I decided to take all of the power equipment, even though I may be buying a Saw Stop when we get there. We will have to see what the budget will hold. There is a 1 3/4 car garage under the house in NC, but the ceiling is only 7 feet high, which makes swinging plywood and longer board a problem. I am going to set up temporary shop in it, then build a shop building after. The city ordinances say I can build up to three 600 sq. ft. outbuildings, so that will be the size of the new shop unless I can figure out away around things. I need enough shop to be able to handle remodeling and some cabinet work as we make the house fit our lives. I have been voluntold that I will be removing the trash compacter and moving the dishwasher to be closer to the sink. For some reason, it is a good 6-8 feet from the sink. Shouldn't be too tough, just enlarge the hole for the trash compactor, redo the plumbing and convert the old dishwasher location into pantry shelves. I also have to do some serious electrical work. The house only has a 100 amp service, but it has four electric meters. The previous owner had a beauty parlor added over the garage and it has its own meter. There was an apartment in the basement that was rented out and it has a meter. I haven't figured out the fourth meter yet. I am going to install a 200 amp service along with a 24KW generator for power outages. I have to have power for a CPAP machine and I don't want to think about what my wife will say if we have one of the extended power outages the South is famous for. Then I have to run a 100 amp subpanel to the garage for now, which will be run to the new shop when it is ready. This is getting kinda long. I will post pictures as we go. First set will be packing the existing shop in CA.
Mark J
Good to hear from you @Robby W. Thought you'd wandered off. Congrats on the quick sale, that's gotta be a relief. So do I understand correctly, you're boxing/crating/wraping your tools and equipment, but Allied is going to move them?
JohnG
Remember that Allied will (should) tag every box or item that gets put on the truck and list a description and condition of the item. Some teams will be good about this and some will be lazy. Make sure they are accurate or else a claim will be difficult to file later if there is an issue. Hope your journey goes well! Let’s get together once you’re here.
Tom King
All sounds good so far. I wish my to-do list wasn't so long, or I'd come give you a hand for a couple of days. Even though we're both in NC, Google says it's 185 miles. That's about half the miles I've put on my truck this year.
curlyoak
On your new shop, why not have the roof extend another 12 to 15 feet overhang? You would have more room in nice weather and when the inspectors are gone you could add some walls?...
Popular Post Robby W
Finally an update. This is going to be a long one spread out over several entries. The moving van arrived at our San Marcos, CA home on Sept. 22nd. This was three weeks earlier than I expected as the people that bought our house got a cash sale with a 15 day close on their old house. I mistakenly OKed an earlier close that we had originally set up. I had the movers handle more of the packing than originally planned, which was a mistake. They tore up my shop while I was at a doctor's appointment and in general made a mess. Here is what it looked like while they were loading the truck: Maybe someone can invert it for me. I tried, but it keeps coming in upside down. We left California on September 24th, 2022 and drove to North Carolina, arriving on September 28th. As mentioned above, we used a moving company to handle the move and it cost a bundle. The moving van arrived in Yadkinville on September 30th, the day Hurricane Ian was due to arrive. They rushed the unload, stuffing things wherever they wanted. I managed to get a few things into the right place, but have had to move probably 100 boxes around. They broke the crown molding on the bookcase I made for my wife, and a spindle from her antique rocker. Broken wedding china, broken file cases, and a bunch of other stuff. We still haven't found the contents of one of the kitchen drawers, the one that had all of our utensils in it. I very carefully made a shipping case for my wife's family heirloom china hutch, which has a curved glass front on part of it. I screwed two Harbor Freight small dollies to the bottom of it. You could push it with one finger, even loaded. When the unloaders arrived at the new house, I showed them the wheelchair ramp and told them to use it to take the big stuff up into the house. I caught the idiot trying to turn the shipping case on its side to take it up the front stairs. I almost got a shotgun out! After some serious yelling on my part, they finally rolled it up the ramp into the house. They spent more time arguing about it than it took to do it. An Ian arrived and sprinkled all of my cast iron with water. Still removing rust spot OK, enough whining. My daughter pulled up all of the carpets in the house for me as my wife has to use a wheeled walker to get around. She said we had oak floors in the bedrooms and hardwood floors in the living room. I had her get them refinished. Turns out she was correct about the bedrooms, although there is heavy iron staining from the carpet staples. But the living room wasn't a hardwood floor in the normal sense. It is birch plywood underlayment, so I get to put in a hardwood floor soon. We purchased prefinished red oak flooring (wife's choice) and I am going to do the install. We priced having it installed and it would have been a bunch of thousands of dollars for 330 square feet. So, I bought a Bosch Glide sliding miter saw and a stand, the necessary nailer and will lay the floor as soon as it is acclimated. Got a couple of weeks to go. In the meantime, I have to install electrical for my temporary garage shop. There is a single 120 volt outlet that runs the garage door and, for now, my 120 volt tools. See another post about today's fun with the bandsaw. I have to have the new electrical to power my air compressor to run the flooring nailer. I hope to have this done in the next week or so. I am going to tap off the service to the basement apartment and install a 100 amp panel in the garage. I have started to arrange things in my new garage shop. Bought a new set of Milwaukee drill and impact driver, which has been great. Remodeled the laundry room so we could get the washer, dryer and freezer in. Solved a plumbing problem in the bathroom, new shower door in the other bathroom. Got a ridiculously large 85" TV and set it up for streaming. I am going to end this one here and will continue in the near future. 3
Coop
I think the pic is in the right position as everything seems to be topsy-turvy! I also think you would have been justified with the shotgun. Hope the next few days, weeks and months improve significantly.
legenddc
Sounds like a pretty awful time. I can't believe so much was broken. Best of luck with the flooring install and figuring out electricity!
Chestnut
Yikes that sounds miserable.
gee-dub
That's the joy of using a bonded and insured mover; they pay for all that stuff. Wow, San Marcos to NC . . . talk about a culture shock. It is always exciting setting up shop in new digs. You get to apply all the things you've learned to the new space. A little time in the shop will help blot out the experience with the movers I hope.
JohnG
I was just wondering how it was going for you. Sorry it’s been so rocky! For the damaged furniture, file a damage claim. They’ll send out a furniture repair company to quote the repair. They’ll give a quote of many hundreds of dollars to fix and the moving company will pay you that amount. You then use the money to buy new tools and fix the furniture yourself. We had a cheap coffee table damaged in our move. The company quoted almost $400 to stain and replace a 2x18x3/4 pine board. I did it for the cost of a small jar of stain and kept the money. Our move was similar, Redlands CA to Norfolk VA. I’m impressed that your stuff arrived so quickly. Ours took 2-3 weeks. Coop
From the pic of your home in Cal, having to mow grass now is probably a new experience as well!
