BTW, I think I'm also seeing some more sneaky spammers whose posts seem on topic but include links to advertising.

Looks like a few 'real humans' are trying to slip in some free adverts, also. I just banned an account that was created more than a year ago. Maybe the bots are hijacking existing accounts now? Wouldn't be the first time.

I wish there were some easy and cheap ways to better vette prospective new members, so that the mods wouldn't have to spend half their day swatting these flies.

We could ask Marc to disable new user accounts for a week or so, that might make them turn elsewhere.

I hate to put out an "unwelcome sign" for new folks but hopefully they would come back.

Hmm, it does look like there is a way to require moderation of posts by new members until they hit some # of posts (similar to how we block them from posting images now by putting them in some group).

Well, they must have gotten tired of Temu and started a new campaign for Vigortrix.

Hopefully it's a switch and not an addition.

I happened to catch one, that made five posts, despite having just joined 17 minutes before I logged on.

Odd, the forum software doesn't seem to allow me to post that rapidly. Wonder how they get around the time limits?

I smite, smite, smite and they disappear. Mods make me feel powerful.  Thanks mods.

I was thinking of writing a python program that would log in repeatedly, look for temu posts from new accounts, and ban them.  Then the temu spam went away, but now it's back.  Is this a crazy idea?

That would be appreciated, if it's not too laborious.

It should be a straightforward program, but I haven't done much python programming, I haven't done any web client programming, I haven't done any programming in years, and I haven't done any programming on my current setup.  So, lots of known unknowns and unknown unknowns.

I'll think about it when I finish my taxes.
