Chestnut
Lucky that you got to experience that era of motoring history. the late 60s early 70s was a very interesting awesome time for cars. I'm young so i also love the early 90s Japanese sports cars.
Jim DaddyO
Very cool. I enjoy going to the races. Love getting my dose of nitro-methane fumes.
HoffmanWoodworks
I grew up drag racing. My dad would travel all over the Midwest. His car wasnt at that level, but he had one of the fastest all motor door slammers. Those were some fun times. Some of those race days they would have the nitro burners. It was always funny to watch evryone crowd around, then the would start up the motors. Watching the people scatter after the fumes hit them was always entertaining

Tom Crawford
Any idea what the G-force he experiences at that acceleration?
Chestnut
Average is around 4gs launch is somewhere in the 8g range. It was interesting to note that the engine only undergoes 540 revolutions under load redline is 9500 rpm. Oh they also burn as much fuel as a 747.
treeslayer
yeah, i think its around 20+ gallons per run, the guy across the street was a top fuel driver back in the late 60's early 70's with a front engine dragster
HoffmanWoodworks
And they typically they basically rebuild the motors after nearly every run.
Chestnut
I talked to guys in the pits and they mentioned they get usually a weekend out of the block pistons and rods. Piston rings and bearings get replaced after every run.
drzaius
Here's a good video on how modern dragsters do what they do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VF0JwxQqcA#t=819.104965
