bgreenb
Wow, you did that with an exacto knife? Ha - no way I could make it look that neat. I tried it with one project and it looked like a four year old did it, so now I just use the good old sharpie.
Eric.
It takes a little time and patience. The grain wants to grab the tip of the blade and make it go where you don't want it to go. Start off very light, and slowly carve deeper and deeper. It's still rather sloppy looking, but I prefer "engraved" over marker, regardless. It's on the inside of a rail where it will never be seen...but it's there. bgreenb
Oh don't misunderstand me - if I could do it as neatly as you did, I'd be doing the engraving too...but after that first try resulted in total crap, I bailed out and went with the sharpie method. Maybe I'll give it another shot with my next project...
..Kev
I've been toying with the idea of an engraver.. Might have to pick one up and give it a go..
wdwerker
I have written with a sharp awl and then colored it with a sharpie. Not as neat as Eric's efforts but it is far more indelible than the sharpie alone.
Eric.
Extremely happy to report the brass insert experiment went off without a hitch. I was nervous about this part...uncharted territory on a near-finished project and all. Thanks again to the forum brains that helped me iron out the kinks. These things are rock solid...no reservations whatsoever about the rail joints now.

Gary
Huuuhhhuhhhhuhhhhihhiuuuuuhuh Drugs are bad, m'kay? LOL Yeah, sorry about that... That was in response to the B&B post, which I thought was the last post in the thread because I was using that stupid Tapatalk app and I didn't realize there was another page. Carry on! Popular Post Eric.
Due to a time crunch and a lack of interesting things to post, I kind of abandoned the journal mid-build. Sorry about that...rest assured you didn't miss anything exciting. This thing took way too long to complete, but it is done. Getting good pictures proved impossible in his little bedroom...just couldn't get far enough away from it. So the old cliche, "the pictures don't do it justice" is especially true for this one. I'm pleased with most of the build. And I'm not gonna tell you what I'm not pleased with. A shot of the slats... Stress test... Kid tested, mother approved... Another one for the books. Time to shift gears. Thanks for tagging along.

Eric.
Thanks guys! I don't see any pigtails! Well no, I wasn't gonna leave them and call it good...but I went through about 10 discs of each grit to get there. Ridiculous. What'd you use for finish? Ol' reliable. Arm-R-Seal satin. Four coats. wdwerker
First thing I noticed was excellent choice and layout of woodgrain. It shows that you spent time picking the "show" face of each board. I'm thinking all that time hanging out at the lumberyard pays off doesn't it ?
wtnhighlander
I see nothing but fine work, my friend! Very nice indeed. Are those panels of maple? Headboard looks mighty wide, wish I could find lumber like that around here.
Eric.
Thank you peeps. First thing I noticed was excellent choice and layout of woodgrain. It shows that you spent time picking the "show" face of each board. I'm thinking all that time hanging out at the lumberyard pays off doesn't it ? It definitely does, but actually not in this case. The cherry in the frame parts and rails came from rough boards because it was the only 6/4 that was available. So it was a bit of a craps shoot. But I did spend a lot of time laying out the parts after the initial milling. The top rail of the headboard was a no-brainer with that killer streak of dark grain. I knew immediately where to put that one. I see nothing but fine work, my friend! Very nice indeed. Are those panels of maple? Headboard looks mighty wide, wish I could find lumber like that around here. Yeah, both of the curly maple panels came out of one long, wide board. It started out 10' long and nearly 22" wide. Lopped it in half, panels were done. LOL
ChetlovesMer
Sweet build, Eric. I especially love the picture where his sister is tugging on his cheek. ... Cute. Great work, brother. You should be quite proud of this one... and the little ones as well.
