wdwerker
If it's behind doors grain direction on a shelf isn't as important.
Popular Post CandorLush
Two applications of timbermate mahogany and now it is time for the danish oil! I would have preferred to do the ARS but he and his wife felt the TM + DO + lacquer looked the best with the rest of his stuff
Popular Post CandorLush
Top is finished and waiting for lacquer, plywood panels all prefinished, doors glued up, frame glued up, oil going on the doors..... I can see the light!

Popular Post CandorLush
Thanks, I also put a little profile on the underside with my hand plane to lighten the look.
Popular Post CandorLush
After the glue up came out ok, I got the pore filler on the rest of in, next time I will do that FIRST, dumb move on my part. Still was able to get it all sanded down with my little mouse detail sander (what a MESS) and oil applied Was not looking forward to putting down all of that lacquer indoors so I set up a spray area to at least contain it somewhat, it still sucks but it has kept the smell down below the "Wife goes to hotel" levels. And there is where we are, the depth of the sapele in the top is REALLY coming out with the lacquer so that is kinda making it worth it. Also, the lacquer is totally dry in the last three pictures

Eric.
The cabinet is looking awesome, man. Are you at all concerned about weight capacity? Those legs look fairly delicate. They look good, but I wouldn't want too much weight on them...like if anyone ever tried to put a fish tank up there I'd have a heart attack. The color of that sapele is fantastic. It's so much better than African mahogany...in every way. Keep up the good work.

Well it is a bit too high, at 45", for that one idiot friend, who has decided all furniture can be a seat, to jump up on top. That and ...... *deep sigh* we still are planning on cutting holes in the top for the ventilation so I am hoping that will discourage too much heavy stuff. Thank you for the kind words and the look of the wood is really what is keeping me going on the project.

Have you explored other options, like potentially a sub-top with holes in it and building a gap between the sub-top and top for ventilation? Would be a shame to ruin that top....

I am still trying to go that route, I am hoping that I can get it to keep the right temps with something like the quiet bearing PCI slot case fans, but I haven't been able to spend enough time to find ones that will work the way I need them to. EDIT: Centrifugal fan, that seems to be the term I was needing. Link to amazon for one: http://a.co/8NO8h97
Derek_PNW
Wow! This is great! I am glad I stumbled across this! Now you're making me nostalgic and making me want to run Molten Core or BWL (can you tell how long ago I was playing).
mkrusen
Oh man bad memories in BWL. More wipes than I care to admit. The cabinet looks great and that sapele is magical. What look is your friend going for? Stormwind?

Haha thanks, they redid them both recently for higher level players that were really cool.
Popular Post CandorLush
Sorry it has been so long since my last update, the cage is done and just waiting for delivery! Good news! The top was saved! We had enough room for some low profile blower fans to sit above the lights but below the top and exhaust it out the back so we don't have to cut into anything visible. We added a 3/4" steel square tube to the top to fix the sag in the second picture and the fans are mounted just behind the bar. The glass in the doors is the museum glass from Hobby Lobby, with 40% off coupons they ended up at $48 each so it really stung when I nicked one with a pin nail and broke off a corner. I attached the glass with silicone and the wood retainer strips with hot glue as I was gun shy from the mishap. The glass looks fantastic in the piece and it is 100% replaceable if anything ever happens to it. The lacquer on the right lower door was a bear to get right, I ended up sanding the frame down twice. The biggest mistake I made on it was putting blue tape on the frame to fix the panel. I left the tape on for two days while I got the panel 100% and then found out that off-gassing lacquer binds to the glue in blue tape which created a disaster level mess. The top was a lesson in patience as I tried to buff it out early because I just wanted it done but, just like everything says, lacquer will look cloudy and uneven if you don't let it cure first. Thankfully I had enough coats that I could just wait a week and start over at 1000 grit with wet sanding on the random orbit. I went 1200, 1500, and 2000 with the orbital and then hand sanded with 2000 and 2500 along the grain to remove any swirl pattern. To polish it out I pulled out my car buffer and some Meguiers Ultimate Compound which I wiped off with blue towels wet with Denatured Alcohol. While I was waiting for everything to cure, we had some nice 75 degree weather here in Maryland so I set the piece out to get some heavy UV exposure I ended up just using the left over piece of sapele plywood and actually really like the front to back direction of the grain. I used just a single coat of the medium walnut danish oil on it and really like the darker brown matte finish that it has up against the gloss/red tones of the rest of the piece. The knobs are from Lowes as they actually were pretty close to the hinges but the ice box latch is solid brass from Cliffside and is just awesome to use. Here is a "glamour shot" to show the three pieces together, I think it worked out well for combining hardware from three different companies. I would say this is the finished product but their was about a 1/8" gap between the door so I made up an cockbead-esque astragal that I applied to the two right hand doors and I haven't taken a picture since I did that The glass is so clear I had to put the blue tape on it so I wouldn't bang into it by accident.
sheperd80
This is looking great man, nice work. That sapele is beautiful. I agree with the others though, those legs look underpowered. I used to have a bearded dragon, what a cool pet. He didnt do much but id let him loose in the backyard and hed climb to the top of the pool fence and sun bathe all day, freaking out visitors :-) Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk

Thank you, and that does bother me a bit, I scaled up the dimensions of the case but neglected to do the same on the legs, probably because I had blinders set on following the template that came with the article. Good lesson learned and, hopefully, it will only be an issue of looks. If I had to venture a guess, another 3/8" in thickness each way would have evened it back out. Popular Post CandorLush
The lighting was not good at all so I will get better pics later but delivered and installed!@Brendon_t It is running hot for now but it really isn't too bad so he is switching the bulbs out for some lower wattage one and we hope to have the man himself move in sometime in the next day or two
