Popular Post estesbubba
That is really cool! And with a project named ZigZag it's fitting that the editors were stoned when drawing up the plans.
wdwerker
Drum sander is just a phone call away ! Project is looking good. What kind of finish are you going to use ?
estesbubba
I would be all over @wdwerker's drum sander offer even if it costs you a bottle of Tullamore Dew! Card scraping all that would have my thumbs hurting for months.
wdwerker
He's got credit from the last bottle still left !
wouldwurker
What kind of finish are you going to use ? With walnut, I really don't like any finish but watco. Everything else always looks weird to me with the open pores.

wouldwurker
The flame birch better be worth it, because I'd be done this project 3 times over if I could have used my planer after each glue up! wouldwurker
Made a test piece to make sure I don't screw up these miter cuts... given my history of screwing up miter cuts. As you can see I took a lot of time getting that dado just right on my test piece Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
..Kev
Smart move! Too much time invested to screw it up now!
Keith Phillips
Yes I just figured out the zig zag box problem myself Im making several and glad I figured out before glues started.
Popular Post wouldwurker
Yeah! Those miters are tight. And that's with no pressure at all.

wdwerker
I like the pattern being visible inside the box. Proof positive that it's solid wood not veneer.

wtnhighlander
Sweet job on the miters, Vinny! That pattern wrapping the corners creates a really freaky illusion.

Popular Post wouldwurker
The bottom fits. Nice thing about using birch hardwood, is that Baltic birch ply actually matches it. The top will be sunk into a rabbit, which makes me a little nervous because it's technically in a frame and there's no room for expansion. Usually I rabbet the top into a dado in the box. Hopefully it won't move too much as it's only 3/16" thick, and the grain runs and 75 different directions. Haven't rabbet'ed the top of the box yet but it'll look something like this: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

wdwerker
I would make the width of the lid about 1/64 loose. That should allow for any movement.
bushwacked
Damn this thing gets nicer and nicer!
wtnhighlander
+1 to what Steve said. A panel that size, with such varying grain orientation, isn't going to move much in any given dimension.
