Jzd89
Found this left on a job site I was cleaning up, just wondering what kind it is
Tpt life
Not near enough info in that pic. Clean surface and end grain help a lot.

wdwerker
My guess is poplar or some other cheap wood.
Eric.
Driftwood? If you want any opinions that mean anything you'll have to at least send it through a planer and take higher quality pics. All wood starts to look fairly similar when it's weathered like that.

Llama
I'll guess... It looks like the worst walnut I've ever seen. Maybe if you clean it up it will be the second worst?
wtnhighlander
Fire wood? I'm leaning toward poplar.

Coop
Slice the sap off and run that bugger thru the planer and let's see what you've got.

Sawdust512
It appears to be walnut. It is very likely that when it is planed and scraped it will show the purple grain typical of older pieces of walnut. I'll trade you some cherry for it right now. How on earth do you guys think you can ID Claro walnut from those pics? Claro and black are almost impossible to tell apart looking at freshly milled lumber in person. It does appear to be walnut but there's no way y'all can say which species.

logos
No way to tell for sure, but I spend a fair bit of time browsing at Gobi walnut here in Portland which specializes in western and this looks pretty similar. Definitely could be something totally different.
Eric.
Which one is claro and which one is black?
logos
Tough call. Not really sure from these pics. I am used to seeing aged reclaimed western locally but don't have a lot of experience looking at aged Claro. My above comment was my best guess and only a guess based on my experience. I wouldn't be shocked if it was even a different species. I'd guess the top pic is western...
Eric.
I think if the OP lived in the northwest then it might be a bit more logical to guess that it's claro, although it would still be nothing but a guess. My point is only that claro and black walnut both come in a range of colors and figures, and while claro does tend to contain more intense figure in the crotch areas and is more prone to curl, there's simply no way to distinguish one from the other without tracing its origin somehow. I'm sure the Center for Wood Anatomy Research has some scientific way of identifying either species, but to most casual observers, there is no discernible difference between the two. My taste test above proves the point...the top is black walnut and the bottom is claro. According to the sources anyway...there's a good chance they don't know the difference either. I do agree that when you see that crotch walnut with the heavy figure and feathering, it's more often claro. But not always.

wdwerker
Does look more walnuty now. Any chance you can take a sander or hand plane to a section ?
Unknown craftsman
Never lay rough sawn wood on the ground like that.Unless you like feeding sand and dirt though your machines. Or your preparing the wood for your arch enemy. In that case nice move It looks like some standard walnut to me nothing Claro about it.
