Source for slabs

Anyone know of a reputable source, that might have a bookmatched pair of red oak 8/4 - 10/4 boards or slabs that would together make a 46" wide table top, at least 66" long?

I can pick up in a 3 - 4 hour driving radius of Jackson, TN. That puts me close to St. Louis or Chattanooga, maybe Jackson MS. Farther than that, will probably cost less to ship.

My day-job boss has asked if I can build a 'unique' table for him. Working out the details, but he wants a thick red oak top, not live edge, but slab-like. Some sort of trestle base.

This place may well have what you want, but they are very expensive, to say nothing of shipping:

Paul, do these folks sell slab? Looking at the site from my phone, I only see finished furniture.

When I was there 2 years ago, they had lots of huge beautiful slabs in addition to finished tables and such. If you poke around the site, you'll see that they are "urban sawyers" for really big trees.

Hello all, I retired last year, and about five years ago I started stacking and stickering live edge slabs for future projects. I like to make live edge mortise and tenon benches. The first thing I saw was the request for Red Oak slabs. I assume you want them air or kiln dried? I'm in Frederick MD, so a good ways off. I have 6 or 8 30" Red Oak logs that I haven't slabbed yet. They are 7 1/2 feet long. I hate for my first post to look like I'm peddling stuff. I also make toy train display boards with old Oak Fencing. I just saved close to 100, 7 1/2 foot by 6" by 1", fifty year old fence boards from the burn pile on a friends farm.  I run them through the planer, then rip one board down to 3" wide and mount toy train track to it, and glue it to the 6" tall back board. Make great display boards. I was too late to save the boards from the fence guy. The original boards were 16', but he just took a chain saw and ripped down each side of the posts, so every thing was less than 8'. I like to save the 16 footers, then I can make one display board the length of a lot of rooms. Sorry to get off topic and start rambling, probably the wrong forum for that. But, I come from four generations of residential tree care, and I can get most any trees that grow in the Mid Atlantic area free. I've got Dawn Redwood, Black Walnut, Fir, some Spalted Maple, Red Oak, Tulip Poplar stacked all around my yard. I mill most of my slabs at 10 to 12/4. If anyone is in this area you are welcome to stop by and see what I have, Joe.

Thanks for checking, Rick...I'm awating a call back from a place in Northern Alabama, that seems promising.

Joe, glad to hear about your stock. Wish I were closer!

That model train display is a neat idea. My son is a RR fan, and loves to run the HO models. Might have to set him up something like that.

Joe, so as not to hj this, perhaps start a new thread. And I say this not in a sarcastic way but  I'd really like to see the things you speak of. And rambling is welcome here, some great stuff comes from it. Would like to see your benches.

No problem, I found the introduction forum and started a thread there. I had all of my pics on Photobucket and they pulled the plug on hosting. As soon as I get used to navigating the site, and figure out how to post pics I'll get some up, Joe.

Ross, a guy I know sent me this site that's close to you, I looked, but didn't see any slabs, but a phone call might uncover something, or at least he might be able to point you.   butleradamshardwood.com

We don't carry oak slabs, Ross, but we have plenty of big 8/4 red oak boards. I can't imagine you'll have trouble finding a source nearer to you than we are...but we're here if needed. $5.50/bf, FYI, S3S

Its surprising just how difficult it is to find kiln dried hardwood for sale to a hobby-level customer around here. East of the Tn river is better, but oak slabs just don't seem very popular.

Does U-pick have stock that could make a finished table top of 46" wide x 68" long, finished at or near 2" thick, with only 2 or 3 boards?

Eh...definitely not two...and three boards would be a stretch.  Most of the 8/4 red oak in stock at the moment is between 8-12".  It varies from shipment to shipment...sometimes huge boards come in, sometimes they don't.  Right now we have African mahogany boards that would be wide enough to do it with only three...$8.50/bf.  When that pack first came in there were a few bookmatched pairs that could have made 46"...but they're gone.  So it just depends on what's on hand at the time.  I don't think I've ever seen 23" red oak boards here.

Several good options here, guys, thanks!

The CL adds inspired me to up my game with search terms, and located an urban tree reclamation place only a couple hours away. They have some slabs listed that would actually make this table top from one piece!

I have an inquiry placed about their drying practices, etc... hoping this turns out well.
