Tony Wilkins
I currently use a Lie-Nielsen low angle jack for shooting. I have some money from a relative to spend on a gift. Would a Veritas Shooting plane be enough of an upgrade to sway me to use that money on it?
Chet
If you are getting good results and there are other basic tools that you need, I would probably put it toward those. If the shooting plane is the only tool you need to complete what you want in your shop then it would be a worth while purchase.
Tony Wilkins
I've really got a pretty complete tool kit. There's nothing I would say I am lacking on in a Basic kit.
Just Bob
Here is an excellent review by @derekcohen. And I may be wrong, but I think @gee-dub wrote a review on here a while back. http://www.inthewoodshop.com/ToolReviews/LVShootingPlane.html
pkinneb
I have tried them both and they are awesome tools...but they are also pretty pricey for one trick ponies. Having said that I will probably have one at some point
Tom King
For years, I got by with planes I had. A job came up where we had hundreds of pieces to fit in an inlaid floor repair, so I bought the LV Shooting Plane. I wish that it had been available decades ago. It takes almost all of the skill out of fitting something perfectly. I've been hoping for another job to come up that will require me to buy the left handed version, but so far, hasn't.
Tony Wilkins
Ok the ‘usual’ question that always goes astray on other fora... i usually prefer Lie-Nielsen but I just can’t see paying $180ish for it. Am I missing something?
gee-dub
There is no good answer to this. I guess the bedrock adjuster preference might sway you (I'm a Norris man myself)? Keeping all your tools in the same family might sway you? I'm sure you will get suggestions.
Chestnut
The LN is more expensive because it uses more metal. 9 lbs for LN 7.75 lbs LV. The casting mold for the LN looks more complex and it looks like there might be more parts. Those factors make it more expensive. Is it worth it .... idk. I own the LV shooter and there are no corners cut, it really is a great plane. I also am a PMV-11 fan, i feel it takes a bit sharper of an edge than A2. LV makes a great shooting plane, but I will eventually buy the LN, just because all my planes are LN and I don't want to innovate, I'm very satisfied with their tools and customer service. That said, LV also sells some very useful guides for your shooting board. LN has nothing in that department. That's been stopping me from placing my order with LN. I guess I will wait until they offer something similar, it's not like I really need the plane anyways.

About 10 years ago I won an eBay auction (quite cheaply, I might add) for a Stanley #51/52 shooting board and plane. I've built many ramped shooting boards over the years and used then very happily with the LV LA Jack, but the Stanley was the one I wanted. The #51 plane needed to be rebuilt (broken frog), but once done was sublime. A few years went by and replaced the Stanley #51 with a LN #51. This was Heaven. It is a fantastic plane. I just love the looks ... because it looks like the Stanley.A couple of years ago the Veritas Shooting Plane (#51 equivalent) came for assessment. And it stayed. I love the LN, but the Veritas is just a better user. Tony, if you still need to ask ... i usually prefer Lie-Nielsen but I just can’t see paying $180ish for it. Am I missing something? ... then you did not take the time to read the review I wrote, which is linked to above by Just Bob. Tony Wilkins
I did Derek and had read it before. I like your reviews but doesn’t mean I don’t want a wider variety of opinions and experiences. Think I’ve decided to go with the Lv - which is now out of stock.

I had to wait 1 month for the Ln 140 i bought. It gets delivered tomorrow. Hope your wait isn't as long.
