Popular Post gee-dub
One of those things you do without thinking to share . . . I needed to cut a 1/2" rod in half and had to be pretty close as it was already a bit short for the application. I drill a hole the size of the rod through a piece of scrap. I then cut a cross into the scrap at the bandsaw. The long cut only has to go just past the rod to allow the saw to make the cut. The short cut as to go far enough past the rod to allow the vise to apply some squeeze to hold the rod still.
Immortan D
Good solution. I use one of those angle grinder support pedestals. They work fine. It looks just like this one: Saves time and effort.

Mark J
How do you line up on your cut line on the rod?
wtnhighlander
Works for pipe and dowels as well, I assume?

I can then look down the slot and see the black line on the steel rod. Any contrasting color to your material’s color should work as well. wdwerker
Looks like you could just offset the line 1/2 the thickness of the jig. Why not do 2 marks, 1 over 1 under the needed measurement.
