Popular Post treeslayer Posted February 10, 2022 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 10, 2022 Ok time for the glue, i thought i would apply the first coat of finish before glue to ease clean-up, turned out to be a mistake because i used trans-tint dye mixed with shellac but forgot to drill the holes to lock the tenons in, so much care was needed to ensure that i didn't have any tear out that would be tough to repair. as you an see the holes are square, the process was to draw bore the pegs, did that, then before glue up use a mortice chisel in a handle and create a 1/4" by 1/4" by 3/8" deep hole to accept walnut pegs creating the illusion of square pegs to fit with the rest of the table then on to the top, as mentioned i wanted walnut accents on this and the QSWO board i had was only 7" wide and i needed 16" for the top, i thought to use a 2" strip of walnut down the middle with a spline on each edge to create the illusion of it being one piece and in the clamps it went out of the clamps and to continue the square peg accents i did the same process with the top as is on the legs but this time they are false pegs, they don't do anything but add accents, hey Greene & Greene can do it so can i, cleaned up with a 3/16" chisel, pounded the pegs in and sawed them off flush 6 Quote
Coop Posted February 10, 2022 Report Posted February 10, 2022 Dave, and I ask, only as I have read the article. Pekovich’s table has a full length spline jointing his two table top boards. 1) Did you cut slots/grooves the full length of your three boards or 2) Slots only on the ends for faux splines and edge glued the rest of the lengths together? I suspect the latter as you said the pegs are false and their only purpose was aesthetic. Quote

Popular Post treeslayer Posted February 12, 2022 Author Popular Post Report Posted February 12, 2022 Finally done with this one, 3 coats of satin ARS, sorry for the poor quality of the journal, i didn't take nearly enough pictures of how it was built or showed how it was done, thanks for looking and as usual any comments are always welcome 10 Quote
Chet Posted February 12, 2022 Report Posted February 12, 2022 That came out real nice Dave, great work. The grain in all the parts is really spectacular. 1 Quote
wtnhighlander Posted February 12, 2022 Report Posted February 12, 2022 Nice! I think the plugs along the 'racing stripe', and the cord-wrapped end rails are cool design elements. And that grain IS gorgeous! Quote

Thanks Ross, I’m getting better with applying dye it really makes the grain pop, I’d like to hear if anyone has sprayed shellac with dye, I’d like to try that Quote
Coop Posted February 12, 2022 Report Posted February 12, 2022 I zoomed in n the first pic and I really like the spline treatment. Great execution on the whole piece. 1 Quote

Mark J Posted February 12, 2022 Report Posted February 12, 2022 Very nice, Dave. And you moved through that project pretty fast. Quote

Well truth be told Mark I had a running start at it, I take pictures with my phone and then send them to my desktop to be resized and then posted , also I had a huge order for 70 cutting boards come in and had to squeeze them in the middle of the table build, I guess the actual build time was 30 hours more or less 1 Quote
curlyoak Posted February 13, 2022 Report Posted February 13, 2022 Very nice! I enjoy the curly, the qswo, the walnut accents, the excellent finish. Just the right amount of curly. It needs to be accentuated like you have done. Too much can be gaudy. I am sure if I saw it in person the table would hold my attention. I could not just walk past it... Thanks for sharing! 1 Quote

Chestnut Posted February 14, 2022 Report Posted February 14, 2022 Beautiful table! I really like the little details. How you joined the top with the tongue and groove even adds some visual interest to the ends of the top. I like that! It was essentially the same as spraying shellac but with some small added risk. If you sprayed a bit heavy in 1 spot it was more noticeable with the dye in the shellac. Was there dye applied to this table? It looks darker than what I'd expect from just ARS on white oak. Quote

Yeah Drew there was, trans-tint, I think it was classic maple, foam brush everywhere but the top that was a small rag, large flat surfaces are a bit nerve wracking with dye for me at least just looking for something easier and thanks for the compliment 1 Quote
